Don't forget the power of the pen

Tonight I got out my equipment to continue polishing the bolt on my Marlin 60, and finished up a letter campaign I started yesterday.

After filling it out and sending it, I noted the list of politicians that affect me:

President Barack Obama (D)
Vice President Joseph Biden (D)
Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ)
Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ)
Rep. Donald Payne (D-NJ)
Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ)
Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno (R-NJ)
Sen. Raymond Lesniak (D-NJ)
Asw. Annette Quijano (D-NJ)
Asm. Joseph Cryan (D-NJ)

I added Nancy Pelosi and John Boehner to this list, and wrote till my hands hurt each of the last two nights. The letters are a page for the most part, as they likely will only be read by a staffer until they can determine Support or Oppose. The Democrats I just wrote my feelings on the Second Amendment - for Christie and Lt Gov Guadagno I reminded them that they need votes of conservatives like me to remain in office, and anything less than vocal support of gun rights and executive action to prevent infringement of those rights will cost them my vote.

You wasted ink on writing the President and Vice President.

They've already known what they wanted to do since well before their second term or either of the shootings that have happened.

Kiln, I like to believe that trying is better than not. No, I don't think I'll change Biden's mind, but never in my life have I written a letter to a politician (that I can remember), and doing so helped me cement in my mind that yes, I care enough about this that this is absolutely an issue that will win and lose my votes. Putting a bit of sweat equity into it helps me own it a little. I don't want to stand on the sidelines and watch my rights get taken away without protesting through legal and relatively easy means.

It is never a waste to write out a note to even anti officials and make your position clear. Those hand written notes carry a weight that is important to letting officials know you took the time and made the effort to let them know your position. If enough of those hit their desk then they at least understand the level of opposition they face.

Got these in the mailbox this morning. I was surprised when filling out addresses that the state legislators that "represent" me are practically right next door. I am going to check if they have visitor hours.

I'm in Austin, TX so I have some liberals at the state level that I need to pressure. They have ignored my phone calls, emails and letters to date. Good think they are in session and I live close to the capital. Think I will drop by and say “hi” in person.
