This is the reply i got from congressman Sam Graves Of Missouri, yes it is generic but the fact that he sends these letters out makes me a proud Missourian. I called his office afterward and told his secretary that i am very happy with the response and will spread the word to all the gunshops and second amendment groups i the area

Dear Tmothy:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the tragic events in Newtown, Connecticu t and the potential legislative responses currently being considered by Congress . I appreciate hearing from you and welcome the opportunity to respond.

Mere words are not enough to describe the grief I feel from the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary school. The lives of twenty beautiful children and six brave adults were taken far too soon; a parent should never have to bury their child. I know I share the sentiments of every American during this tragic time.

Upon taking office, I swore an oath to support and defend the Cons titution of the United States. As such, I am committed to preserving the right of law-abiding citizens to purchase, own, and use firearms for legitimate purposes as guar anteed by the Second Amendment. The shootings at Sandy Hook should not be used to promote an infringement on our Constitutional rights. In a free society like ours, it is an unfortunate reality that the government cannot prevent every evil and tragic event from occurring.

Semi-automatic firearms were introduced more than a century ago. They account for about 15 percent of the more than 250 million privately-owned firearms in the United States, and are used for the same purposes that other firearms are, including self-defense, hunting, and recreational and competitive target shooting. The term "assault weapons" is a general one used by the media and anti-gunners to intentionally blur the line between fully automatic firearms, which have been banned since the 1930's and semi-automatics, which are common and popular firearms.

It is my position that we do not need to enact another assault weapons ban. Evidence and FBI crime statistics have shown that the first attempt at a ban in 1994 did not produce any noticeable reductions in crime rates, which were already trending downward before the ban was enacted. More focus should be placed on the laws currently in place and on our nation's mental health system.

Our founding fathers included the Second Amendment in the Constitution in order to ensure citizens could defend themselves against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and we must never forget or compromise this right. Please know that I will fight the Administration and my colleagues in Congress at every turn in their attempts to restrict law-abiding American's right to purchase and own guns.

Again, thank you for contacting me regarding this important issue. Please feel free to call my office at (202) 225-7041 should you have any further questions or concerns about this or any other issue, or visit my website at http://graves.house.gov for more information.

Sincerely,

If I were a resident of NY or CA I honestly wouldn't bother. Your words will not sway the rabid anti-gun politicians views.

That's a great letter.
Also, even if your own representatives are known anti-gunners you should still write them. They should at least know there is a large amount of people on the other side, might not make a difference, but it DEFINITELY won't make a difference if you don't write them to begin with.

thats exactly the kind of attitude we cannot afford to have.

who cares if your senators/ reps. are anti gun. send them an email, send them a letter, call their office.....make YOUR opinion known, who cares what they want, they work for you, its about what YOU want.

and it take what, <5mins to email them.......your telling me you cant find a few spare minutes to send off an email?

hell, i live in MA, both my senators and my rep are all Dems. they still got an email from me.

All that is required for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing.

Dear Mr. Cooke:
Thank you for contacting me to express your support for common-sense gun laws. I appreciate hearing from you, and I share your desire for sensible federal gun safety legislation.
The massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School tragically stole the lives of 26 people, including 20 small children, and broke all of our hearts. We have failed our children, and we must take common-sense steps now to protect them. Since 1999 - the year of the massacre at Columbine High School - 258 students, teachers, and others have been killed in school shootings. Another 212 have been wounded due to gun violence at our schools.
The slaughter of innocents must stop. We cannot prevent every attack by those who wish us harm, but we can and must take some common-sense steps. First, we must take weapons of war and high-capacity clips off our streets; second, we must ensure that local law enforcement is involved in reviewing conceal and carry permits; third, we must close the gun show loophole so background checks are conducted; fourth, we must keep all guns out of the hands of the mentally ill and get them the help they need; and fifth, we must keep our schools safe by utilizing all of the law enforcement tools at our disposal.
In the days ahead, I will work for a comprehensive strategy, which includes sensible gun laws, a focus on mental health, and school safety. When there are an estimated 300 million firearms in the United States, nearly one gun per person, now is the right time. When more than 31,000 people die each year from gun violence in our nation - 87 people every day - now is the right time.
Again, thank you for writing to me. Please feel free to contact me again about this or other issues of concern to you.

Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer
United States Senator

This is the crap I get from my senators. So I sent her a second, more blunt email since the 1st one was obviously filed in the round bin.

You can yell at a yellow wall to be red all day long but at the end of the day the wall will still be yellow. The fact is that if you've got a rep like Cuomo or Feinstein, your five minutes might as well be spent yelling in a dark room because at the end of the day you'll have the same result. If you've got moderate reps then by all means, write them.

Look to CookeMonster's response to see why it is an exercise in futility to write rabid anti-gun reps. You'll get back generic "for the children" responses and plenty of "common sense" measures rammed down your throat.

who cares.....

perhaps if enough gun owners actually spoke up, and didnt just assume their efforts would be a waste of time, then these senators/reps might actually realize theyve pissed off enough people to not get re-elected.

even if it doesnt, thats not the point. if they are going to take my guns, its going to be with me kicking and screaming at them the entire way....not with me sitting on my ass feeling sorry for myself.

its 5 mins of your time, even if you get back a "its for the children" response.....its not like your out a huge investment......hell, if you want, PM me your contact info an ill write the letter for you.

With all due respect, this is defeatest nonsense.

SOPA was being rammed through Congress in 2011. Word got out and Congress was buried in phone calls and emails. SOPA went from a foregone conclusion to being radioactive in a matter of days. It wasn't stopped by big internet companies. It was stopped by people like you and me writing and calling our legislators. Watch this video to see Aaron Swartz, one of the anti-SOPA organizers, explain how it happened.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=Fgh2dFngFsg

There are 80 million gun owners in America. Do you know what would happen if Congress were to be buried with 80 million phone calls, 80 million emails, and 80 million letters? Gun control would never pass. It would be the most radioactive piece of legislation ever proposed in history.

If we all sent one email per week, made one phone call every other week, and mailed one letter per month Congress would quake with fear. This only costs minutes of our time and pennies of our money. I make phone calls and send emails during TV commercials. I dig the change out of my couch to buy stamps. This takes almost zero effort.

Nothing passes unless we let it. Nothing. The only way we can possibly lose is if we say "why bother?" and give up.

If a bunch of internet nerds can stop Hollywood, our 80 million voices can stop anything.

Edit:
Your writing to Sen Boxer and my writing to Sen Durbin is not futile. Every minute their staffers spend reading our letters and listening to our phone calls is a minute they aren't spending advancing gun control. They aren't wasting our time. We are wasting theirs and I take great satisfaction in that.
