Educate me about 1911s

Another thing is my first choice would be a blued or blacked slide, not stainless or chromed, as there is more glare on a bright finished slide, as far as the lower frame, anything goes, I kinda like the bright finish on the frame.

It took a century for the 1911 to become a Desert Eagle. Magnum Research cloned it in 2010 for $700. They are tight and the trigger is crisp. The magazines are top shelf also and it comes in a nice locking carry box.

I bought a SA Loaded for my first 1911. I bought a S&W1911PD Commander, scandium frame with CT grips. For carry I really like the lighter weight and shorter slide, not so much for 300-500 rounds at a long range session. The S&W had a better trigger out of the box, and they know how to make an external extractor work.

Stay away from the Ponies! The ponies are bad. Sure they come with an impressive pedigree, and their shiny black coat is still the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. But a lonely pony is a sad pony. Others will come and join the herd. Before you know it, those shiny black sides will be all lined up in a pretty row, and in the places where you buy them, their herds will look small and lonely by comparison.

Excuse me a minutes, I need to look in on my Colts . . .

A link to one of the most impressive 1911 articles I've ever seen (concerning magazines)

My personal preference for magazines is the MecGar 7 round (chromed follower and welded bottom plate) and the Chip McCormick 8 round magazines.

Two cents from the owner of a Springfield GI-45:

Determine what features are likely to be most important to you in the platform, then spend as much money as you can up front, rather than a similar or greater amount down the road in "fixing" or customizing the gun. It's easier to "downgrade" a model with all the bells and whistles - that has had more care put into its initial construction - than it is to take a "starter gun" and attempt to overcome limitations in slide-to-frame fit, etc. To my mind, the frame, slide and barrel (in that order) should be your most important considerations.

Like I said... two cents.

another vote for the Sprngfield mil-spec. i bought a stainless steel model. my buddy liked it so much he went out and bought a parkerized model. lotta gun for not a lotta dough.
