Even Russia is trying to use Newtown to promote gun control.

Their violent crime rate is double what ours is. They have a ban on handguns and require all firearms to be locked in a strong box. They still have mass murders, by the way.

:scrutiny: Okay then...
And now for something completely different.

Seeing as that the Russians have a strong tradition of autocratic/oligarchic rule which goes hand in hand with having a very efficient and ruthless secret police/police state, it's not surprising that their response to crime would be to limit personal freedoms and further enhance the importance of security provided by the government alone. Plus they wouldn't want your average Ivan looking at places like Syria and Libya and getting any ideas.

libya had armed and trained foriegn forces called rebels fighting to overtrow the government there those same forces are now being called terrorists when they returned to their home in mali and algeria

same thing in siria all the snipers cought by the sirian people are white with papers from the uk or isreal many reporters not owned by the mass media are being killed and tortured by the same murderers then the mass media says it was the government of siria killing them

the "rebels" took an airbase from the government the next day planes fired uppon the people and the mass media said it was the government again

same way they lie about guns they lie about other things

Or even looking at Russian history around 1917...

Good point, MicroTechniqs. Unfortunately for the Russian people, it's a system that has worked quite well over there and I don't see any signs of it changing soon.

No offense, j.kramer but I don't even know how to respond to you there because we're clearly dealing with two completely different data sets.

The Russian government is very corrupt at all levels. Almost any infraction over there will be overlooked if an appropriate bribe is made. My guess is that guns are pretty common there, regardless of what they say.

The only thing you need to verify if a Russian official is corrupt is to see if he has a $100,000 watch hanging off his wrist. There seems to be a weird tie between corrupt officials and very expensive wristwatches. Same type of thing happens with corrupt Chinese officials.
