Alright, I just ordered the last things I needed for my AR build.

Right now, I have a DPMS receiver with DPMS parts. 6 position collapsable stock, RRA. And I just ordered an upper with M4 feed-ramp cuts, an M16 bolt assembly, and 16" chrome-lined barrel with a fixed A2 front sight and bayonet lug. I also have a charging handle with an extended catch.

I just bought a multitool, but I have no vise and just a few punches. This should be fun!

Thanks for the links!

The only thing left to buy is a rear sight. I've talked to my local shop and they have a good one for pretty cheap.

I enjoy building all my guns because it gives me an idea on how they are put together. So far that includes AK builds, Mosins, Remington 870, FAL, and now hopefully an AR-15.

Although they can be useful, if your upper's already barrelled you don't need a vise.

Sounds like fun; show us some pics when you're done.

Everything I bought is in parts. Uppers not barreled. But is ok, I'm use to doing it the WECSOG way.

Why are you risking trouble with a M-16 bolt assembly? An AR-15 would be just as good and you don't risk going to jail.

Building your own AR is great. The satisfaction that you get cannot be described, only experienced.

I started with this:

And wound up with this:

All I'm waiting on is my Branson Compensator (NY legal) which is in the mail and I'm done. Well with this build anyway.

Enjoy.

Sincerely,

All colt AR-15s carry M16 bolts. It's not part of the fire control group or does it mess with the disconnector. There's nothing illegal about it.

Only thing I'm worried about is the barrel and the upper receiver that has M4 cuts.

AR-15 bolts and M-16 bolts are different, AFAIK. The Bushmaster catalog that comes with a Bushmaster AR has really good pictures of what makes them different.

Having an M-16 bolt assembly in an AR-15 can be worth 10 years at Club Fed and a $250,000 fine.

If I am full of male bovine fecal matter, I apologize.

Negative. As noted above, all new Colts, civilian or otherwise, now come with M16 BCGs. The M16 bolt carrier group does not make a rifle fire in full auto.

Here's the key passage from the letter Deer Hunter refers to above, the subject of which is Colt's inquiry as to whether or not they could use M16 bolt carriers in the manufacture of AR15s:

We can only inform you that if this installation were to create a firearm that fires automatically, it would be a machinegun as defined; conversely, if it did not result in the production of a weapon that shoots automatically, it would be lawful to posses and make.

LEGAL TO USE, AS LONG AS IT'S NOT FULL-AUTO

Ok now I am confused. Because Colt is installing them and they aren't making the guns fully automatic, it is ok?
Then why the beef with the M-16 triggers, safety, disconnect, etc.? Without the auto sear they will not make the gun fire automatically either? It sounds a little too close to the edge for me, especially this line. "Accordingly, based on previous FTB recommendations not to install this bolt carrier and the conclusions presented in the passage cited above, our Branch cannot specifically authorize you to install an M16 bolt carrier into an AR15 rifle."

I would hate to rely on this letter as a defense against prosecution.

Thanks for the info, I stand corrected, confused, and pissed that the agency that is supposed to help, is against us.

Sums up my feelings for the ATF pretty well too. :)

Ok, I canceled that first order. I had forgotten about Del-ton's custom upper build page.

So once everything was canceled and the money was back in my account, I went ahead and ordered exactly what I wanted. This time with no ramp-issues, both barrel and upper will have them.

Be sure to get an extractor upgrade kit with black insert and o-ring. Some bolts, like the BravoCo, come with this installed.
