Took my new (to me, anyway) SA58 Para Congo to the range this morning. Boy, was it fun, and a whole lot more accurate than I expected given my past experience with FALs.

The ejection pattern was off, however, and I'm wondering if I might have a problem. First of all, case ejection was not at all consistent. Most were thrown about 10-15 feet and slightly to the rear. A fair number, however, went more forward than rearward (landing about 3-5 feet ahead of the firing line). Perhaps 1 in 10 just seemed to drop on the bench next to me.

I adjusted the gas port per SOP (close until bolt won't lock back and then open 2 positions), and was shooting it on number 5. Ammo was surplus NATO ball. I did find that two of my mags were bad -- one had a floorplate that kept working out under recoil and the other gave consistent feed failures. The random ejection, however, happened on all mags I tried.

Also, it appears that the brass is spinning and hitting the receiver just aft of the ejection port with a fair bit of force. About 2/3 of the cases I inspected had dented/deformed mouths. There was a lot of brass deposited on the receiver.

Any idea what's happening? Is it anything I should be concerned about?

The rotating of the brass and striking the reciever immediately rear of the ejection port is normal. So is a dent in the case mouth. Sometimes, a dent in the middle of the body (where the struck the rear of the ejection port as it pivoted rearward) appears as well.

I find that most brass winds up forward and about 15 to 25ft right of the gun under normal conditons
