I finally got a mosin. A fairly nice rearsenaled M38. It had already been mostly cleaned of the cosmo but not completely. So apart it had to come. While trying to remove the stock rings(is that what ehy are called?) I was having lots of troublegetting the rings to even move. I made the mistake of thinking that maybe there was cosmo that making them stick. Bright (dumb) idea! Break cleaner works real well on cosmoline.....and rifle finish.

So much fro keeping it totally original. A refinish is a must.

Does anyone have a guide or link to a guide to refinishing my poor mosin. I would like to get it fairly close to the original color. I am a finishing idiot. I have done the suedofinish on my Yugo SKS and, while nice, it iss't even close to the look that should be on a mosin.

Any advice will be helpful.

I stripped all the gunk off of my M38 and M44 using some kind of stripper I found at Rural King and restained the wood, then topped it off with a couple of coats of tung oil.

My M38 doesn't look all that close to original as I used a dark stain for it.
My M44 looks a lot closer to original as I used a reddish stain on it.

Just be patient when stripping all of the old shellac off of the stocks.
