First Time Loading .45acp fmj-rn 230 gr.

I was wondering if anyone could give me a reciepe for the Hornady 45177 fmj- rn 230 gr. bullet. I have some bullseye and unigue powers. What i'am really trying to find out is what would be best bullseye or unique and o.v.l. and how much crimp.

The two powders are generally used for two entirely different purposes.

You'll find Minimum O.A.L. in each printed recipie, plus MAX load limits. I use the Lee Factory Crimp Die and love it.

I use 4.5gr-5.0gr bullseye OAL 1.273 Fed 150 primers (or what ever I can get locally) crimp is 0.473. I don't load Unique very much, but follow the recipe from Alliant and you'll be fine.

I run all my 230gr FMJ bullets between 1.250 - 1.270, as for crimping fmj bullets, you can do it, but its better to just remove the belling. I stop at .470

Taper crimp only and just enough to hold the bullet. Load for the bullet weight. Who made it doesn't matter. Jacketed bullets are too expensive to shoot regularly. A cast 230 grain RN or FP with 4.5 grains of Bullseye is a nice, accurate and pleasant load.

1.260 to 1.265 O.A.L. for 230 Gr. FMJ and any powder that floats your boat.

I prefer AA# 2, AA# 5, W231, WSF, and Universal Clays in the .45 ACP. Don't care for Clays. ( I know, blasphemy, sorry ) N310 & N320 are also excellent but expensive.

Last week I loaded some 230 gr. Hornady FMJ EMC's with 6.2 grs. of Unique: OAL was 1.260 and #300 primers. The gun did not mind the load but I was not impressed with the "groups". Next time I try Unique and that bullet it will be 5.8 - 6.0 grains.
