I am thinking about ordering the 16" M4 Rifle Kit from Del-Ton and would like to put optics on it. I assume that the A2 sight would interfere with optics. Would I be better off getting a 2 rail, 4 rail, or 2 rail with detachable front flip up sight??? I would think I could find a flip up sight a little cheaper somewhere else but still need to decide on 2 or 4 rail. Any advise offered would be greatly appreciated.

Hiya,

I went through the same thought process not too long ago.

I figured that I was going to run optics and wanted a flip-up front sight to it would stay out of the way.

Here's what I did: (I ordered from Del-ton as well)

- I went with a 1:7 16" M4 Barrel with M4 feed ramps and T-Marked upper.
- I used a Specter Low Profile Gas Block so it would slip under the free-float forearm
- I had them change out to a Rifle Length YHM Light Weight 4-Rail Free-Float Forearm.

This gave me a Standard Rifle length sight radius on a carbine and ensured that I could fold down my sights for use of optics.

Here's a picture of the build. I've changed a couple things as I am working this into what I would call a mini-SASS-ish carbine. But this will give you the idea:

I've run scopes on 2 of my AR's and have had no problems with the front sight except a very slight ghosting on 2x. It is not a distraction for me, I would concentrate on a good back up rear sight.

I currently have on my 20" del ton upper the 2 rail block and am using a millett 1-4x dms-1. I have no BUIS yet but might add the someday. The 2 rail is nice but if i was to do it again i would probably go with the YHM flipup gas block

Choy what is the story on AR's in NY? My son hauled a DPMS M4 up there and didn't read any Gun Regs. From what I saw in NRA's web site what he had would have bought him some time. He brought it back home on leave so its not a problem anymore plus I now own 3.

You can't have flash hiders, bayonet lugs, or more than 10 round mags. Basically the capacity rules are the same as they were before the 2004 sunset of the awb. You can have compensators only and they have to be pinned/perm attached. If the frame of the weapon was made before 1994 than, from what I have been told by other police officers is, the entire weapon is legal as it is exempt from the 1994 AWB and grandfathered in. Magazines are unto themselves and if they state on the mag made after 1994 and their capacity is greater than 10 rounds it a class D felony because its a high capacity loading device. Anything made previous to 1994 is legal.

I looked at the NRA site and that is straight from the NYS penal law so trust it.
