Did anyone else happen to notice the latest issue of Gun Digest magazine? This is the newsprint large format magazine that used to be known as the old Gun List, BTW.

There is an article titled the Ten Best of the Shot Show. One of the best is a mini-review of a slide/barrel kit that Guncrafters is supposed to release soon to convert a Glock 20 or 21 to, hold on to your hats, .50 G.I.! It should be available in a few months, and MSRP is under 500 bucks.

At first I thought it was bull$#@&, as I have not heard nor read anything else about this. Most of the gun rag and website Shot Show reviews have come and gone already with no mention, and I search those Shot Show reviews with intensity.

There was an excellent, clear photo, and the article said the conversion utilized a purpose built single stack mag that fit the Glock magazine well. Eight round capacity with a flat floorplate, nine rounds with an extended floorplate. Considering the size of a 20/21 mag well, there really is no reason the .50 catridge would not fit in single stack format.

The slide appeared to be stainless, and was essentially conventional Glock styling, no forward serrations or weird angles. It looked, well, just like a Glock, nothing strange or remarkable. Overall, the idea was surprisingly simple, and didn't seem jury rigged or Rube Goldberg whatsoever. A very clever adaptation of an existing platform.

Considering that the cost is far, far more reasonable than buying a Guncrafter Model 1, there may well be a use for all those non-SF framed that owners are selling off so as to buy the 21SF! Plus, it is a conversion. No further registration, just buy it over the counter. :neener:

Ok, I had never heard of .50GI until this thread googling it online I only found links to buying ammo in 2rnd packages for $5. Midways does not carry the ammo , where would someone get ammo for this gun and what would it actually cost for a 50rnd box?

Good ol' Guncrafters - STILL truckin'.

Hmmm - .50 GI for Glocks?

A Glock 30 in .50 would be fun.

Especially since the .50 GI is meant to operate at .45 ACP pressures, and isn't some insane Magnum autoloader cartridge. Something like 300 grains in the 700-800 fps range sounds like nice, gentle recoil while still bringing big medicine on the other end.

Thanks Otony!

"The important thing here is that you can now take a reasonable inexpensive gun and shoot unreasonably expensive ammo in it.:

At last report, reloading was still available to all and sundry. That small skill has not been legislated away....yet. Makes the .50 only slightly more expensive to shoot than a .45ACP with superior effect.

I still struggle to understand exactly how the .50 GI is superior to .45 ACP+P or especially 10mm auto, .45 Super and .460 Rowland. I don't see reduced energy and reduced magazine capacity in the same gun as an advantage.

The four instances you cite are increased recoil. Standard pressure .45 ACP has a wonderful record of ending fights quickly. The .50 GI is designed around creating the same recoil impulse as standard pressure .45 ACP, only firing bigger rounds.

And remember - Jeff Cooper often said that he only carries a .45 because they don't make a .46 caliber.

It also brings me .05 closer to the x-ring or perforations. Or the no shoot if I am unlucky.

I wonder why they are making it with a whole new slide assembly. Shouldn't it be possible to do such a conversion with nothing more than a new barrel, magazine, and possibly a recoil spring? I don't know, maybe I'm missing something.

I found the article, not much there. And nothing at Guncrafters.

I would be interested in this conversion because while some guns go to eleven..this one goes to 12...millimeters that is.

As to the slide, ejection port issues? It has to be just a bit wider or heavier or lighter?

I wonder when Tanfoglio will make a conversion kit.

I think this round will catch on if GCI actually produces this kit and then you will see more and cheaper loadings.

I would guess that the .50 GI simply won't fit in a stock Glock slide. Besides, if they re-do the entire upper as they've done, the slide can be weighed right, as opposed to adapting to factory Glock slides.

I must say that if I liked Glocks, I'd LOVE this!

Wow, I'd never heard of this round before today. What a great idea!

I'm going to stick to .45ACP due to budgetary constraints (even handloading .50GI would cost more money for new dies, brass, and boolits) and availability of weapons; but maybe someday when finances allow.

That's the first cartridge I've seen that I think would be as beautiful as the old faithful .45.
