Great day w/ an AK...

Due to a slip up in our states Assult Weapons laws, AK's are back in CA. This is a good thing. I have never owned one before and never really shot one that much. I mostly stuck to my AR and Mini-14's.

Since the AK's are legal again, I sort of impluse bought one. It is a Sierra Arms Inc. and it is great! I was very impressed with the quality of this rifle; it seems much better than the Norinco's that I was used to seeing a while back.

I did not have time to do extensive testing at the range as I was tuning up my varmint rifles for a CO PD trip, but I did manage to squeeze off about 100 rounds. This is hardly a torture test for an AK but I was amazed by the accuracy. There were not failures of any kind. I was using Wolf ammo.

I was able to hit a 10" gong about 60% of the time at 200 yards. I did not think this was possible w/ and AK. I had heard all this stuff about a 100 yard gun. I know that 10 inches at 200 yards it not that great in comparison with bolt or tricked out AR's, but it suprised me for an AK. I am sure if I play with it some more I will improve.

Overall it is a very light,compact, reasonable powerful, and reasonable accurate rifle. Looks like I have found a new rifle for my backwoods/desert travels.

I have no idea what this means, but I'm glad you're getting a chance to own one. I have a token AK in my collection. It's a very interesting rifle. Best of luck with yours!

Mine does not have a pistol grip, so it is legal. I am going to add a monsterman grip adapter to make it easier to shoot.

HOw the heck do you shoot an AK without a pistol grip?? I can understand in an unmodified Saiga rifle with the trigger group further back -- but on a standard AK it sounds darn near impossible!

It was my understanding that the AK was banned in California by its action. Any AK action rifle is banned. Is this true? Might not be a law, but a "ruling" by the attorney general's office. You know, BATFE style.

WRT the off-list receivers with no "evil" features: Yes, they are silly, and yes, the rifles are little more than toys. But. . . they allow us California gunowners to do a few cool things.

Unlike the horrid FAB-10, the off-list receivers are exactly the same as the receivers you can buy in the free states. All the oddball stuff we are forced to do to these rifles are completely reversible. If California laws change or we decide to move to a free state, we can simply remove the unwanted stuff and configure the rifle the way we want to. As it stands, I can cross the border into Arizona and configure an AK the right way to shoot it and then return it to Cal-legal configuration before I return home.

Also, the past year and a half has been great. We made the California DOJ soil their pants and also made them look completely stupid and useless.

In addition, like the original poster, I also got to shoot some AK's that weren't as bad as, well, the tired AK's that had previously been available to me.

ECVMatt I think the song goes "Today I didn't even have to use my AK! I gotta say it was a good day." Enjoy that rifle!
