Went to the Sports Authority in Albuquerque, NM for the first time last night. Left $1200 poorer, but 2 pistols, 1 rifle, & ~2000 rounds of ammo richer!

Seems Sports Authority company wide will no longer have an FFL after December 31st. So...they have a 20% off sale in the entire gun department. Handguns, rifles, shotguns, ammo, scopes, accessories, etc. are 20% off the lowest price - even sale & clearance. But today, Saturday the 2nd is last day of sale. Their Mgr told me that even the gun safes were 20% off, but I already have one so I didn't check them out.

Sample prices, all new in box:

Browning Buckmark 5.5" bull $160.00 (mine now)
S&W 99 AS 40S&W $424.00 (mine now)
Glock: 17 $392.00, 30 & 36 $424.00
S&W 629 Classic SS 6" $503.00
Winchester 70 Super Shadow 223 WSSM combo/3x9x40 $344.00 (mine now)
CCI 17HMR $5.97 :what: (I bought all 16 boxes they had-was I wrong?)

Well, you get the ideal. If there's a Sports Authority near you it's worth checking out.

I called one of 'em here in Houston, and they still have long guns, and they didn't have any word of not selling firearms in the future.

in florida they've been taking guns out of their stock for the last 2 years. so needless to say there are no guns at sports authority's down here. i remember though, that they had huge selections of rifles and shotguns. i used to love going to sports authority because of the sheer amount of firearms. it was one of the few stores that my dad and i share a love for. all good thinks must come to an end :(

After reading the first post in this thread, I hustled over to my local Sports Authority in Lone Tree, CO. The manager told me they are doing away with handguns but will still sell long guns. I picked up a new Browning Buckmark target pistol for a mere $183.00 after the 20% discount. Thanks for the tip, James!

My local Sports Authorities (Florida) barely ever even carried paintball stuff, let alone anything that went "bang".

Str8shooter

Glad you got a good deal. The store in Albuquerque also had that model for $184.00, but they had one Camper Special left for only $160.00. I guess the only difference in the models is that yours has the slab bull barrell, while mine has the round bull barrell. I almost bought one of each, but I spent (or rather INVESTED) enough as it was. Haven't fired mine yet but I do like the way it fits my hand.

"My local Sports Authorities (Florida) barely ever even carried paintball stuff, let alone anything that went "bang"."

Ahh, but they used to. I bought my first two or three pistols there (back in the early '80s).

Man, don't have one in my area either, but sure as heck wish I did.

While we're on the subject, I'll go ahead and express my very strong opinion that Michigan would DESTROY Florida, and should be playing in the national championship:neener:

Sorry moderators :D

It's a Pattern

I recently mentioned here . . .

Today (Oct 26, 2006), as I wrapped up my due dilligence in shopping for my birthday present, I stepped into a store (near Kietzke and Virginia) that had until last year been called Gart Sports, and which now flies the Sports Authority flag.

The whole handgun counter is marked down.

They are discontinuing sales of handguns by the end of the calendar year.

Whatever I can't get there I can get at any of the 10 or so gun/sporting shops in the area. Sports Authority still selling long arms and all ammo, but discontinuing sidearms.

I picked up a 586-7 (or is it 586+1) that is nearly the twin to yours in the top photo at Sports Authority yesterday -- they're getting rid of all their sidearms -- with a clearance discount that priced it just about on par with the Taurus m66 7-shot.
. . . that Sports Authority 1) did this years ago in Las Vegas with a store they acquired, and 2) is discontinuing sidearms here in Reno.

It seems clear that they have a pattern of a) at least eliminating handguns from their inventory, and b) where feasible, eliminating firearms altogether.

They're not "loud" about it, and they don't openly advocate against the 2nd Amendment, but it seems unavoidable to conclude that they're working to eliminate guns.

I'm no sure how much malice I'd read into it. It could just be yet another MBA pointing out that handling weapons is "troublesome" and "only marginally profitable" and "it's not our job to stand for a principle." It could just by that they can't compute that "sportsmen" who do things like fishing are more likely to show up in their stores if the hunting side is also supported.

Unhappily, it COULD be that they are working to an agenda of elimination.

Of one thing I am certain: you won't get a straight answer from them if you ask the question. What makes me say this? In every store (SA) where I've asked the question, the answer is different: inventory being reassigned, too much paperwork, just a hassle "in this state," just not very profitable, blah blah blah. Any of those MIGHT be true. Or not.

The former owners of this chain (i.e. Gart Sports) made every effort to support the gun trade, kept their inventory current, did seasonal sales on certain arms and ammo, and competent guys behind the counter.

The other gun stores in this area do a thriving business, and in Sportsman's Warehouse, the Hunting department occupies more floor space than any other single department.

Conclusion: Sports Authority has a policy of "no traffic in firearms."

Sports Authority (like many sporting goods and hardware store) here the Northeast part of the People's Demoncratic Republic of Illinois haven't sold anything firearms related in several years.

My guess is that it's because of Mayor Daley, his CAGE unit and the generally anti-2A/anti-RKBA/harrass FFL's/ gunowners attitude of the state/local powers that be, then any evil intent on the part of SA.

So I'm going with the
MBA pointing out that handling weapons is "troublesome" and "only marginally profitable" and "it's not our job to stand for a principle.
theory.

Guns still 20% off

Went back to the Sports Authority in Albuquerque on Saturday Dec. 9th. The manager told me they would still honor the 20% off sale if the customer requested the special price. So...

New purchases:

Beretta 92FS stainless (came with 2 10 rounders) - $467.00 + tx

Buckmark Std model (5.5 Slab, 1 10 rounder) - $184.00 + tx

Winchester Supreme 17HMR V-MAX (I bought all 15 boxes) - $7.99 + tx

$825.00 well spent. But Im running out of cash.
Some more sweet deals!:D

If the Sports Authority near you still has guns, it's worth asking them if you can still get the 20% off deal.
