You got a real good deal, unless the rust is much worse than you described.
The 28-2 revision was the first three screw started in 1961-62 time frame, and was produced until about 1982 when S&W dropped the pinned barrel & recessed cylinder. Both changes were introduced fairly gradually so there aren't real solid dates on when the changes were actually made for each model; plus the dropping of the P&R features seems to have had lots of extra parts used during the transition to produce guns that had pinned barrels but not recessed cylinders, and also recessed cylinder guns that didn't have pinned barrels.
The serial number should start with an "S" if the gun was made in 66-67, or an "N" for a production date in 75-77. Look at the bottom of the grip frame for the real serial number and not a production number meant to keep matched parts together during finishing.

You got a deal.

Be aware that the original N frame grips are escalating in value. A decent set of magnas or targets will now run you $70 or so. Thus, if you have original grips, you only paid $200 for that gun! If you swap out the grips, save the originals.

The four inch Model 28-2 is IMHO one of the best revolvers ever made by S&W. It's fitted like a Model 27, handles like a Model 27, yet can function as a carry gun/truck gun without the associated fear of ruining a great piece. I suspect the value of well cared for Model 28s will go up incrementally soon. They are the last of the easily affordable N frames.

yes the serial # starts with an (s)..no pitting at all on her just light suface rust in like 2-3 spots bluing is i would say 96-98%..its a six inch barrel andit has the origional checkered magnas on them . now the grips could be in better shape

its my first pinned and recessed smith shes a beaut i actually traded a home built ar15 target model for her and 400 dollars

was sellin the ar15 for 700 but took the trade because i liked the smith.

i also picked up my other long awaited treasure a H&K usp45 tac .....
so yes saturday was a good day for me!!

would this gun (28-2) be ok to feed steady diet of 357 through it, just curious

The N-Frame .357 Mags from S&W were designed for a steady diet of hot .357 Mag loads. Only thing to watch for is peening on the cylinder stop notches if you do a lot of high speed shooting. Probably has to do with stopping the fast rotation mass of the larger cylinder.

The 28-2 was the best revolver I ever owned. I traded it off in a fit of youthful stupidity and have regreted it since. :(

I never seem to have the money when I see one at a show, and when I have cash in hand, they are nowhere to be found. Some day...

HKenvy91,
My 28-2 Highway Patrolman was the first S&W I ever purchased...I love mine. My s/n is: S3020xx and S&W Customer Service told me it was manfufactured in 1968.

You DID have a good gun show...a 28-2 & Tactical!!!! What a great day for you!

I'm partial to both guns...my Tactical is without a doubt (in my mind anyway) the most accurate (scary accurate) .45 I've ever shot.

Photos???
