Gun Violence per capita, ban vs no ban question

ok

ok, I see where people are coming from. Now let me ask, when I write my senator to tell him/her that the new AWB will backfire, and will not decrease crime: Would it be better to quote conclusive evidence that the past and current bans don't work? Or should I write and say 'please don't let the antis take my guns'...

I'm not trying to be a smart ass, I'm trying to think how an elitest senator will react to my letter. If I write stating facts from the FBI that bans don't work, they may be interested. If I write talking about anti's and the holocaust, they'll mark me off as just another gun freak.

I would sincerely appreciate your opinions. I really want to send my senator\congressman a study to prove that bans serve no purpose, but it appears the general gun culture is more concerned about the term "gun related violence" than stopping the new ban....

brighamr, I believe the best advice is to clearly and state your position very early in your letter. "I'm writing to ask for you to join me in opposition of bill #1234. This bill damages the rights of law abiding americans and similar laws in the past have shown to be ineffective at preventing crime." The rest of your letter can be well reason facts and statistics. Remember there's a decent chance your senator will never read your letter and an underling will make you another "for/against" mark on a whiteboard.

I think as long as you can state your thoughts without sounding like a crackpot you can convey both reasons why you oppose it. The FBI numbers are a great basis thats hard to argue with, but I also don't see anything wrong with something along the lines of "A bill such as though would also have a negative impact on firearms as a final check on government power. The framers of the constitution thought that reason was important enough to include the 2nd amendment in the bill of rights. Seeing genocide take place across the world even up to this very day, and not forgetting perhaps the most noteable where a western European government killed 6 million people less than 70 years ago, I believe that amendment remains as important today as when it was penned."
