Acetone, kerosene should be ok. Don't see ATF explicitly but as it's really just a lubricating oil, I don't think that should be a problem. So *IMHO* Ed's Red should work.
Whatever you use, follow WNTFW's advice. That thing looks nasty.

There are those that swear by chemical cleaners, and no doubt they work, but I am not one of them. I have yet to discover any chemical method, inclusive of the brake cleaner/kerosene/gas & additive types that work as well or simply as hot (to the point one can barely stick a finger in it) water and a good crud cutting diswashing detergent such as "Dawn".
Do a soak and follow that up with some gentle scrubbing with a brush while holding the piece under a running stream of hot and you'll achieve all you want to without damage.
Follow the entire process with a boiling rinse and then oil ........You'll never see a cleaner gun!
