I generally clean using brake cleaner, but I recently bought a Nylon 66 that is in need of serious cleaning, and I'm a tad leery of using BC on the feed area of the stock and the like.
I'm wondering if Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber is safe on the nylon stock?

I would not use the regular Gun Scrubber on nylon. B/C makes a Gun Scrubber that is safe for polymer - I don't remember the name on the can - that would work. I would still test it on an unseen part of the stock.

Man!

I've seen some dirty guns but that one looks like it hasn't been cleaned since day one.

Be sure to get the right cleaner as mentioned above. Those Nylon 66s' are neat little guns, glad to see you rescued that one.

Whatever you use test on an area that will be hidden.

You could probably start with dishwashing detergent and water.
WD40 or something after to get the water off.
WD40 is not a bad cleaner either. PB Blaster is good also. Whether it is safe for the Nylon 66 is up to you.

Good luck on your cleaning.

Well, I took my "God Hates A Coward" belief to the test and went with regular GunScrubber AFTER testing it, as suggested, on a couple small areas of the stock. The bolt removes easily(this is my fourth Nylon 66 over the years) and with the trigger guard removed as well, you can blast right down thru the thing, not many places for grunge to hide. Brushed it as well as possible then blasto some more. Re-lubed metal parts with BreakFree CLP, bolt got a separate cleaning/lubeing, and she's good to go!

It's worth mentioning that after picking the gun up at the store, prior to even pulling the cover to look at the insides, I took it out in the yard and snapped 24 rounds through it, trouble free. That didn't surprise me much UNTIL I got inside.

When I was a kid I bought a nylon 66. I shot it for decades w/o cleaning. One day I got curious so I took it apart. It wasn't as bad as yours, but it was cruddy. I cleaned it with hoppes no 9.

Prior to cleaning it worked perfect!

There are those that swear by chemical cleaners, and no doubt they work, but I am not one of them. I have yet to discover any chemical method, inclusive of the brake cleaner/kerosene/gas & additive types that work as well or simply as hot (to the point one can barely stick a finger in it) water and a good crud cutting diswashing detergent such as "Dawn".

Do a soak and follow that up with some gentle scrubbing with a brush while holding the piece under a running stream of hot and you'll achieve all you want to without damage.

Follow the entire process with a boiling rinse and then oil ........You'll never see a cleaner gun!

Acetone? That's a plastic solvent; I'd stay away from that one.

I have a plastic dispenser bottle that has used for 20 years and has only had acetone in it. It still hasn't leaked. Finger nail polish remover comes in plastic bottles.

Bottles made of plastic formulated for acetone.

With all the other choices why take the chance?

I agree with you but I've found that Palmolive dish soap cuts grease better.

Brake Claener and Gunscrubber are practically tyhe same thing. The cool thing about that is that they are both available in non clorinated versions.....with the brake cleaning version being much cheaper :)
