Hello everyone!

I bought a new 6" 686 .357 Magnum last year, and I have just LOVED that gun! But it's so dang big that carrying it just isn't an option.

So, for the past month I've been keeping my eye out for a nice used model 66 in .357 as a carry gun. Being out of production AND a popular model, these seem to be hard to track down.

Well, I've been growing tired of the hunt, so I made up my mind that this weekend I was going to buy some sort of carry-able .357 magnum whether it was a model 66 or not.

It worked out well, I thought, that this weekend was the Indy 1500 gun show. I figured the gun show might be a good bet. So, I went there Friday and scoured the whole place. I saw one model 66 at the entire show, but it was beat all to heck, and the cylinder had a very worrisome stick to it. That and the fact that they were asking $700 made me take a pass.

At the show I saw a number of other nice revolvers both new and used, but the only one that really caught my eye was the Ruger SP-101. The only size I could see, however, was the 2 1/4" version. I wanted a carry-able .357, but not necessarily a snub-nose that short. So, I left the gun show empty handed.

The next day, Saturday, I got up bright and early, had breakfast at a nice mom and pop sit down place, and then headed to my local gun shop at 9am which is when they open. This store has a huge selection of both new and used guns, but alas no 66's. They had a short barreled 686, which at first I was excited about. But after holding it, it was too big after all. They had a 3" model 60 which I liked at first, but it really ended up feeling too small. I was itching for a K frame or if not a Smith, something with the heft of the SP-101.

I was in luck! They had just gotten in four brand-new 3" barrel Ruger SP-101's, so if I wanted one, I had the pick of the litter. They were also priced exactly what I could have bought a new SP-101 for at the gun show, so I felt like it was more than fair. So, I happily bought one!

The guy at the counter asked if I needed any ammo for it. I told him I would buy some CorBon Powerballs if he had them in stock. He checked, but he had none in .357 magnum. So, I bought the gun only and left.

When I got into my car I decided to call the local pawn shop that was on my way home to see if he had any CorBons in stock for my new .357. He said he had a box on the shelf, so I told him I'd be right over.

When I got there, I decided to browse his collection of used guns, which is small and there is rarely anything of real interest to me there. (I will also mention that I visited his shop three or four days prior to see if he had any 66's in stock, but he didn't...

Today, however, I peered into his case, and I was surprised to see a 4" barrel S&W 66-7 peering right back at me! I looked at the price tag. $499--not bad if it is in as good of condition as it looks!

I asked to see it, and it was indeed a gem. The marks on the front of the cylinder were faint and looked as if this thing had been shot one or two times at most. Also, the cylinder lockup was easily as tight as the brand new Ruger I had just bought. This was the gun I wanted!

And low and behold, I still had just over $500 cash in my wallet that had gone unspent.

I told him that I wanted the gun, but due to the cash I had I'd have to wait on the box of ammo until another time. But he said, "Meh, go ahead and get the gun, you can have the ammo for nothin'."

He's a super nice guy, and this was a very nice gesture that I was pleased to take him up on!

So, I came home with 2 beautiful guns!

But......

My wife was at home awaiting my arrival...

She knew I was out to buy one gun...

I hadn't asked permission to buy two...

I was going over so many stories in my head about how to explain myself. Everything went through my head from lying about the price, to hiding one of the guns in my gunsafe for a few weeks and then bringing it out, and if she asked about it then, I would say, "Oh that old thing? I've had that for years!"

But I decided to do the unthinkable! I somehow came to the conclusion that I should just tell her the truth.

Well, I did exactly that, and to my utter surprise she laughed and congratulated me on finding the gun I had been searching for! She said she didn't care that I'd bought two, and that I worked hard and deserved to buy something fun now and then...

What's up with that?!?

Well, needless to say. I have a great wife! It's only been 7 years of marriage, but I imagine we'll have 50 or 60 more.

Or...there may have been an ulterior motive--maybe in a week she will be asking for some new appliances or something =P. Oh well, I'm just chalking it up to being a great day!

Oh, and yes I know if there aren't pictures it never happened. So, here is a picture of my two new beauties:

Thanks,

reminds me of an old movie line...
"for having been shot only a couple of times, they sure got him in all the right places"

you did GOOD, GOOD !

That pic of those two guns is an excellent example of why some of us choose wheelguns over autos. Fine, have your Glock or 1911 or whatever. Revolvers are superb weapons. My copy of America's First Freedom arrived today and, as usual, the first thing I turn to is "Armed Citizen," and in all the cases, the defender fired one or two shots and it was over. They either dropped the perp or he took off. One or two well-placed bullets are almost always enough.

I'm not interested in the 66 - I have a couple, but what will you take for your wife?

Are those the stocks that came on the 66? They are worth probably $150.00 or so if they are as nice as they look. Those are old Walnut grips with the diamond around the screw. They are not contemporary to the 66-7. They probably came off of an old model 29 or 27.

They actually look a lot like the sacred "Coke Bottle" stocks that S&W collectors faint at the sight of...

In the words of the immortal John Belushi,
"how much for the women?"

Gorgeous 66, it looks new, and those grips are stunning.

No, LC '92, those grips didn't come with it. It came with Hogues. I should have mentioned that in my OP.

The grips in the picture above are Eagle Grips that I had been wearing on my 686 and figured they did the new 66 justice. They are nice for sure, but they are not genuine vintage or anything.

Here is a picture of the new (to me) 66 wearing Hogues instead:

I remember when my local pusher had a half dozen new 4" 66-7's like that. It was about five or so years back. Unlike the last big production 66, the -6, like my 6"-er, the -7 has the then new 4" two-part barrel - and I think they had quit using the Uncle Mike's Combats by then - going to the same Hogue monogrips as the 686 series came with. I pondered buying one - MSRP $614 - store special $449. The good old days! Heck, 9/03 saw my buying that new closeout 6" 66-6 for $349 + $10 s/h - CDNN had deals then! Those days are long gone. You got a great deal for today's prices!!

Good luck with the SP-101. I had a new 4" .32 H&RM version - horrible QC. Recent production is better there, but I still likely will not get another one, saving my sheckles for a 60 seeming the better part of valor here. YMMV. Congratulations on great deals - and on having an understanding bride!

PS The IL started with the 66-6 models.

Stainz, about the SP-101 QC issues: I am definitely aware of them. I was lucky to have multiple new ones to choose from. I'm happy to say they all had straight barrels, none were cock-eyed. Mine seems to be very well machined and assembled. I haven't shot it yet, but it seems like it'll be a fun shooter.

And yes, my 66-7 came with the IL. It was, however, removed 3 hours after I purchased it and is no longer plaguing my particular revolver. =)

Within the past 3 years I've purchased a new 642 Centennial for my wife, a new 6" 686, and this 66-7--all came with internal locks. I removed them all of course.

It was nice to see them release the 642 without the lock. I bought one of those as soon as my local gun shop got one in, and it is my daily carry gun.

Well, I didn't read all the replies but you should call home from work, tell her not to cook but to dress up a little nice then take her out on the town. And buying a single really nice rose in her favourite color on the way home to pick her up should be on the list as well. A reaction like that deserves a little appreciation. Although I wonder if she was laughing at the guilty schoolboy look that it sounds like you had on your face while telling the story... :D

A little more pragmatism and ability to laugh off things like this in my own SO and perhaps I wouldn't be sitting here with two divorces under my belt. Do the right thing and show her how much you appreciate her for who she is that let's her roll with the punches like that.

Oh yeah, the guns :D Both look great. And while I'm not a fan of full underlugs there's no doubt that on 3 inch and less they really do look right. Just adds a lot to the pudgy bulldog look. I'd be ecstatic to have either of them, let alone both.

Well, you had to mention the IL... My first IL-equipped revolver was bought 9/02. Over half of my S&Ws have the IL. My pocket protector for years has been a 296 or a 642-2 - the latter with the IL. Many thousands of rounds later - and too many fun days shooting the SPC targets with that 642 - and never a problem. I would never order the IL as an 'extra' - but, it's inclusion won't stop my buying one so equipped. YMMV.

Indianoplace? I lived there for the eighth grade (Carl Wilde Scool #79) and nineth grade (GWHS) in 61-62. Cold winters!

Nice post. Nice revolvers. Priceless wife. I know, I have one as well. We are very lucky men, my friend.

Nice gun, Understanding wife, Good combination.

My wife doesn't have any problems with any of my gun purchases, she is understanding also.

Although I do notice that after any gun purchase on my part she suddenly shows up with a new purse, sweater, blouse, shoes, necklace, etc.

But thats OK, I'm not into that stuff anyway.

+1 for understanding wife. Mine told me several months ago I could buy any guns I wanted so long as I asked/told her first; she doesn't want any surprises. Now if I only had spare cash just laying around...

Your wife is a gem to be treasured. Believe me, I know. Our first date was to an indoor target range. Thirty-plus years later and things keep getting better and better. She has been known to accompany me to gun shops to encourage me to get what I want. WOW! She now has her own arsenal of guns that fit her small size.

Oh, yeah, those revolvers are nice, too. :D
