Handi Rifle

My Dad gave me his Handi Rifle on Monday. It is in .223. He shot many a critter with it. It is a NEF and says SB2 on it. Wouldn't know what SB2 was except I read this post a week or so ago. He had a fixed power scope on it. Appears to be an old Redfield 4x. He carried it on his tractor on the frame for the front end loader beside the seat. Otherwise, it always hung by the basement door. Always loaded and never cocked. He would put it away when the grand kids came by. Or have one of us do it for him. He would always tell the grand kids, all firearms are fully loaded at all times.

I was thinking of ordering a wood stock for it. I will keep this one.

Let's see a picture!

I have the same Handi in 223 and its surprisingly accurate. I was shooting some soft point blasting ammo I loaded for my Mini-14 and at 100 yards I had a 1" group. I was having so much fun I didn't realize I had fired 30 shots into that one inch group. I did have a 16" barreled 357 with factory open sights I sold to my bud. He just a few weeks ago had me list it on GB for him and it sold for just under $500.

In the H&R catagory I also have a 20ga Tamer. That gun came with a 20" barrel and a stock like on the old Snake Charmer 410. For me it was unusable so I ordered a proper stock from H&R and its been on there ever since. And its probably my favorite shotgun. I love shooting and carrying that little lightweight gun. It has the hard matt chrome type finish on it too.

I just about a year ago won a 12ga full choke turkey foundation gun on GB for a low price of $90. No one else bid on it. It weighs just over five pounds and no, I haven't shot it. I bet its brutal. If I can find (and afford) some high brass 3" magnum shells I am going to slip one of those in the gun and let my bud be the first to shoot it. I have read they have over 50 ft pounds of free recoil.

I also own two of the old 410 guns with wood stocks. I love shooting those too. I reload 410 ammo and have a 3 ball load that uses three .395 balls I cast. They group in a tight circle at 20 yards. I would use those on a deer if the range was under 30 yards.

I regret not buying a couple more of these guns. I wish I would have got a 30-30 and 22 mag. If they do bring them back I doubt they will be the bargain they once were.

I forgot to ad that I saw some video about PSA and they mentioned the Handi-Rifles and stated that the jigs had been destroyed and they would never be made again. I hope that is incorrect. If so I wish they wold have sold the tooling to someone who would have brought them back.

My .357 Trapper is one of my favorite camping rifles. We like to sit around and the end of the day an take turns shooting pine cones. I now have brass accoutrements accenting the trigger guard and the forend spacer but other than that is it stock.

Congrats on the .45/70. You can load it down for fun or standard pressure for just about anything else.

A .223 Survival version with a heavy bull barrel and hollow stock was the first gun I ever did a trigger job on. After some years wouldn’t eject shells consistently. Took it to a very good gunsmith and he fixed it for about $20. When I saw his fix I thought well that is just stupid simple and my ego took a self induced hit because I couldn’t come up with that resolution on my own. Been 100% reliable ever since although I shoot it rarely these days.

There's just something about cracking open the action and that spent case auto ejecting over my shoulder that I like.

Mine came from my grandpa almost 20 years ago now. It too is an NEF SB2 but chambered in the svelte 22 Hornet. It hits an 8" gong at 100 yards all day long. Had a scope, but it just didnt look right to me.

My first centerfire firearm, when I was in high school, was a 20ga Topper... it was a fun little shotgun, but I was surprised at the recoil. It was stolen out of my apartment a few years later, so I found a NIB .410 (H&R) Topper at a gun show in central Ohio... for $100. 30 years later, I still have that little beauty.. it's a fun shotgun.

I recently picked up a Classic Hunter in .45 Colt... not realizing how hard those were to find. Someone mentioned that you either like them, or you hate them... I found shooting the goofy little thing is about as much fun as you can have with your boots on. I call it my mini .45-70, and it's a hoot to shoot. I do need to find a better rear sight for it... I recently had it out in west Texas, and shooting it beyond 125yds was a bit of a gamble. Sure, I can hold more front sight, but it would be a lot easier with a good peep sight. As someone else mentioned... they do have their idiosyncracies... forearm/barrel pressure being one. I was shooting off stick this go 'round, and it was not working well. I'll have to set down with it at a 100yd range one day and try some different things...

A Topper, JR was my shotgun, too. I remember telling a classmate about it in first grade. He didn't believe me, saying it would knock me down. I was frightened to shoot our Remington 870 and Mossberg 500. I was sure that they, being larger would kick more...but they actually kicked less, even though they were 12 gauges.
