Correct. Here's a link. I don't know what the turn around time on them is, but you can get it in the standard black for $198.95. More if you want different colors/textures.

For what it's worth, I ordered one of those from Lock, Stock, & Barrel at the end of April. I was quoted 6-8 weeks for delivery for the standard black stock.

Thanks kindly for the info! Be sure to let us know when you get it, post pics, and how it works out. :p

Thanks Falconeer!
No problem at all! :)

I'm going to get one of these!

I had my heart set on a Remington 700 LTR, but for $300 more, what's the point?

I like the things I've always heard about Savages. What rings and mounts does one recommend? I'll be doing mostly hunting with it, but some long-distance shooting as well.

Lastly, should I put that $300 I saved towards a something like CZ P01? :D

No knock on the Savage , especially the way they shoot:eek: but any rifle equipped standard with the HS stock (about $250 mail order) is going to be far more expensive than a similar rifle equipped with a plain plastic stock.

I see in the Savage catalog a model with the HS stock but have never seen one in any gun store or gun show. If you compare that model to a 700LTR or 700P the price difference should be far less than $300.

Sorry, not trying to start a flame against Savage - in fact I am seriously considering Savage as my next rifle!

If I go with Savage it will probably be one of the stainless laminated stock VBSS , VLP or possibly the new Long Range Precision Varminter with HS stock.

I've got a set of Leupold rings & bases for a 10fp SA, mint condition, I can let go pretty cheap... I went to TPS/TSR rings & base, Farrel & Badger would be great choices as well! Good luck! You're gonna love it!

I have Ken Farrell base and rings on my 10FP and have been very happy with them. Plus Ken is a great guy; he's more than willing to talk on the phone and make sure you get exactly what you want.

Savage Accuracy

The secret to Savage accuracy is the pinned bolt head, it can pivot just enough to guarantee the lugs always maintain good contact. Most bolt guns have enough slop in the rear of the bolt that the force of the trigger sear pushes the rear of the bolt body up when cocked, that means the upper bolt lug is forced away from the action lug, when fired the bolt slams back and down, causing enormous flexing and vibration. Benchrest actions have tighter tolerances that prevent this.

Be advised...

I've actually witnessed the bolt head retaining pins fail on two separate occasions in the Savage 110/10 series of rifles. One was chambered for a belted magnum, so it used the magnum bolt head. The other was a .308. Savage appears to have come up with a fix to the problem:

Though not a 10FP, how about a lefty 12FLV in 22-250:D

(BTW, the rifle is for sale if anyone is interested;) )

The stock I ordered at the end of April arrived via UPS yesterday evening, 25 May. I believe I ordered it on 24 April. So a little over 4 weeks to get it.

I'm thinking about picking one of these up too. Let us know what you think. Good luck & enjoy it!

Did not get the chace to take it out to the range this weekend, but did attempt to put the action/barrel into it.

I like the construction of it, seems well made, and has a decent looking recoil pad on it.

The review of the stock over on Sniper's Hide mentioned:

On my stock, the fiberglass was slightly deviated to one side in the barrel channel, forcing me to reshape the channel a bit to get the barrel centered.

<snip>

The barrel channel on mine needed some massaging before the barrel would float cleanly.

Knowing this going in, I wasn't too worried about it. When I put the stock on my gun, I noticed I had this issue. It's not quite centered, and there's about 1" of the barrel at the very end of the stock that is touching, otherwise it's floated everywhere else. I may be able to get it centered without much effort. I mainly just slapped it on when I had a few free minutes, fully intending to give it more careful attention before I take it out.

Aside from that, my only other minor complaint is that I am going to have to drill a hole for the rear screw that holds on my trigger guard. Not really a big deal, but just wasn't expecting to need to do that.

Overall, I am pleased with it so far.

yci: Keep us informed, if you please! :) Preferably with pics. Any chance you could take pics of the barrel channel and the screw hole, so we have an idea what we're looking at?

Falconeer: No problem. I'll see what I can do regarding the pictures. Gotta find a good pic hosting place first.

B&C Medalist Varmint/Target/Tactical Installed!!

FedEx came through and delivered the B&C VTT I ordered (I hit the wife up in a moment of weakness :p). I haven't had the rifle to the range yet (just finished installing the stock) but here are first impressions.

1) I LOVE the comb! It naturally lines my eye up perfectly with the scope now. It's like it was custom made!
2) The rear bolt on the stock is not a structural attachment, it just secures the trigger guard to the stock. There was no hole at the attachment block for the screw to fit into; I drilled a small pilot hole and it snugged right in. The original Savage screw has threads like a wood screw so it's probably by design.
3) The barrel channel needed to be sanded out a bit to ensure the barrel free floated. It wasn't much; I used 220 grit sandpaper wrapped around a piece of tube I had and just smoothed out the channel. Clean and free floats now (used a $20 instead of a $1 to test; inflation ya know :p).
4) In the pic of the Medalist stock you'll see what looks like a round dot on the stock. I didn't even notice it until I saw the pic. It's a small raised circle on the stock; it's not a bubble or weak spot (I tapped around and on top of the spot with not difference in sound). Just adds character I guess.
5) The stock is 'beefier' in the hands, but it does't seem to add much weight. There's a much more solid feel when cycling the action.
6) The palm area is MUCH more robust feeling in the hand. I like it much better than the original synthetic. It places my finger naturally on the sweet spot on the trigger rather than having to adjust around to get comfortable.
7) The Harris bipod has a concave rubber lined channel where it's designed to snug against the stock. As the bottom of the VTT is flat, it's contacting just on the edges. As it's rubber lined, I don't see it as being a problem. Attached and snugged down finger tight and it's solid.

All in all, I'm VERY happy with it. Without going to a $500 McMillan or $325 Savage Shooters Supply Super VarTac I don't think you can do much better (this cost me $209 with shipping). Can't WAIT to get out to see how it shoots. I have a box of 50 lovingly reloaded rounds just waiting! :)

Here's a pic:

Prior to that, I had a BearTooth comb kit on the rifle:
