Yesterday I spent some range time with one of my .30-06 Remingtons. This particular one is one that I'd bought for my dad for when he lived in the arctic. Before he died, I ended up getting it back to add to my collection.

It wasn't grouping the best, but was in the general area. Upon closer inspection... it appeared to have a fair amount of copper fouling in the barrel. :barf:

I'd run into this with one of my own guns once before and had snagged up some Barnes CR-10. Swab-brush-swab-swab... swab-brush-swab-swab... over and over today. It took at least six rounds of it to get the bore clean, but, the truth will be in the next outing's groupings.

While I was at it... pulled the stock and got after the "unseen" metal work with some metal polish and some light gun oil. :D

All three of my Remington 700s got the treatment, and it was bath day for the Match Grade HBAR too.

And... my point for sharing this here? Just a reminder... this stuff works on lead fouling as well as copper fouling. Check yer bores, if they're not clean, it's a much easier job to clean a heavily fouled bore with this stuff. Give it a try if you don't have a a comparable product.

Thanks for looking out for us Ratdog. My Mauser needed a bath last week and all I have around right now is BP cleaning stuff! Not that I have neglected buying cleaning stuff for my modern guns...well I have, the shame:uhoh:. I need to run out to Ahlman's Gun Store and spend money on some CR-10. That'll give my wife something to be mad at me about(she's been too nice of late).:what:

As a side note... I don't use this stuff for routine cleaning... not convinced it's "mild" enough for that. I use this stuff for heavy fouling in the barrel. Nickel finishes don't like this stuff... chromed barrels may not like it either... so, read the directions first.

Try a Product called Blue Wonder Gun Cleaner. Gets fouling of all types out of bores, copper, lead, whatever. To date, No damage to blueing on any of my guns. I don't favor the chrome stuff so can't speak to that. Make sure you oil. There will be nothing but the metal left so if left exposed, the bare metal will rust.

One thing I learned from shooting cast bullets in my '06 is YOU MUST get all the copper fouling out or the lead will streak onto it and you WILL get leading. Remove the copper and you'd be surprised how accurate cast lead can be. Too many folks just load up their rifles with cast bullets and are disappointed in the poor accuracy. Copper fouling ruins lead accuracy.

Some shoot these new fangled pointed tips that are copper jacketed... and some of us shoot six-shooter pistolas. :neener:
