Help Choosing Wheelgun

For a fun gun get the gp100. Might not be as refined as the smith but in my opinion it is built MUCH stronger and will last thru a steady diet of the heaviest loads you care to shoot. I tried my neighbors 686 the last trip to the range and its great but just didn't feel the same as my gp 100.

If I were you (which I'm obviously not ) I would choose a Smith and Wesson 627 .357 Magnum with a 5" Inch Barrel. Built on the N-Frame it will handle any hot loaded .357 you throw its way. Not to mention it has an 8-Shot capacity. Common who can beat that?

I would love a 627-5....but I believe they run about $1,000. A little out of my range for a "fun" gun.

If I had faith in Taurus I might try a 608.....at half the price it is tempting. But it really isn't a classic sixgun.
And sometimes you get what you pay for.

GP100 4 inch or a Smith and Wesson 686. They both have attributes that I would whole heartedly recommend. The Ruger is the better, more advanced revolver, the Smith is just so damn cool and is no slouch in the performance department.

Either will give your grandkids something to fight over when you are in the box.

Chris

P.S. before anybody says that my saying the Ruger is more advanced is fight'n words please note that the Ruger is the newer and better design. It is able to be user disassembled, locks up both on the cylinder and crane for much tighter lockup and has a very easy to replace front sight. Just my two cents.

I do however own more Smiths then Rugers.

S&W model 65. Quite a few police trade-ins around that are relatively inexpensive (<$300). It's probably what I'll be looking at in the new year.

I own 2 .357 single action revolvers. A Taurus Guacho that I bought new for $350.00 and a Ruger NMBH that I bought used for $250.00. They both shoot well and I like them both just for different reasons. Kind of like having to choose which of your children you love best. I like the Taurus because it looks more like a Colt than the Ruger, has a silky smooth 4 click hammer and great trigger action and has a lifetime warranty. I have always liked Rugers since the late 50's because my dad had one, they are beefier than the Taurus and even though not as refined in my opinion I think they will take more gun destroying abuse than the Taurus although I don't think the Taurus is a wimp. For the price of one new Ruger or S&W I got a new Taurus and a used 97% condition Ruger. As far as I am concerned it doesn't get much better. I think for what you want a revolver for a single action will do you just fine. Of course this is just my opinion and you can do what you wish. Good luck and safe shooting.

Check out a Smith 28. .357, heavy duty frame, and all class. Since you aren't going to carry it, the extra weight will make it all the more useful.

BTW, it's no harder to find 7 round speedloaders than it is the 6 round speedloaders.

If you want to use it competitively, it is. HKS speedloaders won't make the cut in IDPS or IPSC. You could get the revolver setup for moonclips, not sure about that. If you don't plan to do (m)any shooting matches, it won't be a problem.

I don't think you will go wrong with either a 686 or a GP100. They are both excellent guns but they have a different feel to them.

I have a 4" 686 (originally I had a 6" but traded it for the 4", I like the balance better).

I don't have a GP100, but I have an old Ruger Security Six (predecessor to the GP100). It's fun gun to shoot too. And at the heavy end I have a Ruger SuperRedhawk...again, built like a tank and fun to shoot.

As for Taurus, I have a good 5 shot .357 that I sometimes use for concealed carry. It's a good gun, BUT it took two factory replacements to get it. The first two had serious problems.
