Help Find Mauser 98 Scout Rail

Trouble is, all the Scout scope mounts I know for the Mauser will require the removal of the existing rear sight. Unless you mount an alternate rear sight (as with the Express Sight option) you won't have one at all. That said, the Express Sight system works well: I have two of them, one on a Marlin, and one on an Enfield.

You can also look at Brownells and other suppliers for other options. There are several scope mounts that replace the rear sight, and mount above the wood (e.g. B-square).

Dunno. Without the military barrel (and its rear sight block), you're not likely to be able to do much more than use a AO/Clifton (glassed in) mount. All of the other mounts that I've seen (e.g. B-Square, S&K, Darrells) use the old rear sight base as the primary mount point.

It already has the AO sight mounted, but the barrel is an Adams & Bennett, and doesn't have factory rear sight mount. Can the AO/Clifton rails be drilled and the barrel d&t'ed for the mount? I just don't know how secure an epoxy-only mount would be, with the rifle being drug along through the woods and such.

Well, you'd be drilling and tapping into a pressure-bearing portion of the barrel if you tried it. I've no experience in such things, but I'd be much more willing to NOT do it and perhaps suffer the AO/Clifton mount to move slightly if I drop it off a cliff than to have the barrel do a Tikka on me if the D&T weakened the barrel too much....

I would contact XS Sight Systems. They have scout mounts for just about every application. I'm sure that if you provide them with the dimentions of your barrel they could direct you to the proper mount.
The XS scout mount will not interfere with the iron sights and should be just what you are looking for.

I have one of the glassed in mounts on my scout. I have shot a lot of rounds through it and have hauled it around for many hunting seasons. It's still as solid as a rock. I recommend them.

I called XS today. None of their scout mounts has an inside diameter large enough to fit the flat of the barrel where it comes out of the receiver.

BUT...

I've done some brainstorming tonight, and I thought of this. I want to keep the use of the iron sights when I need them. The rear iron sight is mounted at the back of the receiver, where many of the Mauser scope mounts make contact, so they're out. What if I got the front mount of a heavy steel two-piece weaver style mount for the Mauser receiver profile, d&t'ed the front of the receiver and mounted it, then put on an electronic sight like the Aimpoint that only requires a single ring to mount it? I could use a quick-detach 30mm ring and take it on and off as I wanted. The steel weaver mount would be low profile enough not to obscure the iron sights. What do you think?

You'd have to check whether a scope mounted in such a position would interfere with your ability to load the rifle. A scope mounted front and rear, with high enough rings, should be OK: but I don't know about a single mounting point.
