So, I'm selling my Beretta 92FS on Gunbroker.com, so I can buy the new Smith & Wesson M&P, only I can't decide on which caliber. I originally wanted 9mm but I got to look at and hold the .45 version. Notice the diffences between the two:

9mm

.45

I love the way the .45 looked and felt, but I like 9mm cartidge for its low recoil, big mag capacity and cost. So, what do you think?

i would go with the 9mm, cheaper ammo more bang for the buck, and the .45s haven't been out long i would give them some time to get the wrinkles out.

i would get the 9mm extra mags lots of ammo and then go attend some trainning somewhere.

btw welcome to the forum! glad to have you along.

really for me it would come down to which felt better in my hand, i have small hands and most double stack .45acp pistols are to girthy and uncomfortable to me. so i get single stack .45s and everything else in hi cap models.

Why drive a V6 when you can have the V8?
this point can be argued forever but shot placement is key and with loads like the 155gr +p, +p+, and the 124gr +p they are right at performance levels of the bigger calibers. plus you get more capacity.

I really like both calibers and since you are selling a 9mm to buy another pistol, I would get it in 9mm & then the 45 down the road.

I'm a current M&P45 here, I can't say that I'd recommend it. I'd recommend the USP45 though.
Also, keep the 92FS. I have one, it's always reliable.

I have heard more than a number of issues regarding the .45 although most are very pleased.

The 9mm and .40 seem to be much more trouble free with the exception of some of the early compact models that had an issue with the mag release. My understanding is that this has been resolved in later production.

Given the choice, I would get the 9mm. If you love it as much as I do my M&Ps, pick up a new .45 in a year or so.

I was going to type my normal long and arduous reply, then realized that Anna's dad captured my thoughts perfectly.

So...

+1 :D

I had a .40 XD and after 4 years of shooting it (which I loved) I moved to the MP40 in .45acp. I looked very hard at both the .40 and the .45 and since I reload both anyway the cost of ammo was a moot point to me. With the interchangeable grip panels on the MP40 both can be made to fit just about any hand. The recoil on the .45 is a little more stout, but certainly easily managed in a pistol the size of the MP. Comparing the MP to the XD, I'd never go back to the XD - even for the XD-45. When my MP.45 came I was having some problems with ejection coming straight back and brass hitting me in the face. One call to S&W customer service had me sending it back to them for a check up. It came back in short order working great. S&W customer service is absolutely wonderful!!! They even returned the pistol with a new mag!

Gas milage. I drive a four cylinder Hybrid -- 42MPG (and I don't drive 55!) with more than enough performance to not get stuck in the slow lane. The money I'm not spending on gas is going to ammo :)

I can't talk much about the 45. I've handled it but not shot it. I can say this about the 9mm....I've never been able to take down a row of falling plates faster with any another gun. The ergonomics and fit make it come right back on target.

cron,
i agree the ergos of the .40 and 9mm models are outstanding and i was truely impressed, i like the interchangable backstraps too. plus there is something about the texturing of the backstrap that i really like.

they actually have the same width...the 45 is a single stack.
The 45 is not a single stack - the grip just makes it feel like one. A stack and a half might be a better description. The magazine is roughly 13/16ths wide and holds 10rds. A high-capacity version is rumored to be on its way. In comparison a 7-8rd 1911 magazine is a 1/2 thick. What is thick on any M&P are the reloads. The baseplates are a beefy 1-3/16 wide and nearly 2" long.

+ 1 on the 9mm

I own the MP .40 and 9mm. I lust after the MP .45 [My favorite caliber] But I am waiting until the 14Rd mags come out in the .45 Any poster that owns a MP in a 9mm will tell you they are Awesome guns! Even my MP .40 is the best .40 I have owned. Accurate shooter, reliable as He:evil::evil:, what more is there? Well I will tell you there is more! The grip is one of the Best, bar none! Very well balanced gun. I put the Hogue Grip sleeve on both of my MP's after putting the small back strap on first. It is Awesome! I hope you get the one you want.

The best to You and Yours!

Frank
