Virginia. Gotta love those Gold Star Carry states. Get your drivers license, throw your favorite 1911 on your hip and hit the town! Just make sure the butt of your gun is visible at all times, or you might find yourself out $5000. You gotta wait 6 months to get your concealed carry. Good luck with the move! Oh, and you don't have to register your handguns in Virginia. Wasn't sure if that matters to you or not.

I have lived in RI, NY, VA, and FL in recent years, and I have recently relocated to VA as my primary residence.

A lot of factors should go into your choice (as others have noted)- for me, I need to be coastal (both for work and personal happiness), I HATE winter but as swiftak notes, here in tidewater we had about 16" of snow Xmas Day two years back- and it brought the area to a standstill for about 5 days! That was really exceptional, as was the earthquake, and the Hurricanes, the locals keep assuring me.

Still, having grown up in the shadow of NYC, there's a certain level of rural that's too much for me- I think of what I like as ex-rural, as opposed to sub-urban, but I still like something city-ish nearby.

south of Norfolk, west of Virginia Beach, north of Elizabeth City NC puts me about 8 hours from my Long Island home, and about 10 hours from Jacksonville FL. My dad refers to it as the Land of Northern Hospitality and Southern Efficiency - and there's times I can see it that way, but I do like it here.

Lived in Va since '75. I'm in a rural area in the center of the state. I've had deer and bear in my front yard. But I am only about 30 minutes from two good hospitals, which I've had to use. Competent medical care has become more important for me now that my wife and I are retired. Still, the gun laws are sane.

Unfortunately, there are lot of people who move here from the northeast who decide that they just can't live without having a shopping center within walking distance. Those folk might like Richmond or Va Beach better, as one of the earlier posters noted.

Good luck.

I looked at the VT laws and the trespass law doesn't address a no guns sign. It addresses a No Trespassing sign. I've never heard of the no gun sign carrying any weight at all. While this law may perhaps be stretched to that conclusion, it appears to be a stretch. I have never heard about anyone ever being prosecuted in VT due to a no gun sign. And believe me, that would have made news in VT, big news. Personally I would not be concerned until someone asked you to leave. I believe it to be a non-issue unless you were specifically asked to vacate the premisis.

This law isn't there to enforce no-gun signs. It was created to enforce No Trespassing signs.

Robusto, any word on where you guys are thinking? My vote still goes for central and/or northern PA. :D
I live near Gettysburg. Very gun friendly down here. Last time I was stopped by a cop(headlight out) we spent 15 minutes sitting on my fender discussing gun shops and shooting ranges.

Cool! Even in Altoona, the people are pretty gun friendly. Crime, even violent, has been slowly on the rise there, but hunting especially is still highly valued and respected. Altoona schools are out for the first day of hunting season just like other schools.

Have you never even given Maine a look, come on man...you hurt my feelings....We have open carry, castle doctrine, just to name a few.....
