Hello, long time board stalker and first time poster. I have been reading up on the idea of a scout rifle, as described by the late Jeff Cooper. While I have done a good deal of research on the topic, I am pretty new at modifications (longtime gun owner but generally leave everything "stock").
Basically, I have a Remington 700 Tactical (24in barrel, .308)collecting dust. I have decided that I would like to own a scout rifle, and am trying to decide how feasible it would be to turn my 700 into one. The requirements for this would be that the total conversion needs to cost less than a stand alone scout rifle (such as the Ruger gunsite scout rifle).
So, how big of an undertaking would this be? My current (and unfinished) to do list:
-Replace barrel to 16 or 18in (the rifle is quite heavy currently, and most likely impractical for me, as a relatively inexperienced shooter, to fire standing. Would this change get its weight down to 7-8 lbs or lower?)
-Extend internal magazine from 4+1 to either 7-8+1 or a detachable magazine modification (possibly expensive and unreliable?)
-Add forward rails for a long eye relief optic
-Possibly change the factory stock to something more tacticool, perhaps a side folder.
The 700 is basically untouched. So on top of this, I would then probably want to go about getting it accurized, but I have been told this is something I should go to a gunsmith for. Anyway, thanks for any help in advance! Feel absolutely free to let me know if this idea is way more trouble than its worth.
