A local shop has on consignment a Colt 1911A1 for $450 and I can't decide if I should buy it or not.

It is a 1911A1 marked "United States Property" and "M1911 US Army" the right side of the frame. Basically it looks almost exactly like this one, after searching the web high and low this is by far the closest I could find. Other than the condition of the bluing this looks exactly like it and the down to all the stampings. The only difference is the "JSB" under the slide release was something else.

Like I said they are Asking $450 for it and it comes with three Wilson Combat 8rd mags and Blackhawk thigh injection holster and double mag pouch.

Should I buy this gun?

short answer: yes

i dont have any that old, but i have seen several older colts like that and they ran better than the new ones.

plus, you know, its got character.

Thanks guys, I figured it was a good deal but I always like to do a little research before picking things like this up. I've made poor impulse decisions in the past and I don't want to make another mistake.

I'll pick it up today and post some pics of it after I do.

$450 is basically an insult to 1911 owners. It's like finding a Mickey Mantle rookie card at a yard sale for $20.
Buy it now, before I call my wife and have her buy it.

I can't beleive you guys are misleading him like this. nwilliams you should not buy this gun until I have checked it out for you, no I don't mind just tell me where it's at.............. Your getting about $90.00 worth of mags, that leaves the gun at $340.00. Thats not counting the holster and mag pouch. I think it's and outstanding buy.

I did buy it!

I'll post a whole bunch of pics on a new thread because I'll need some help to identify what I've got, I'll add a link to this post once I have the pics taken.

Thanks for all the help guys, I couldn't be happier with my new pony!

I discovered that the holster (Tactical Level 2 Serpa) retails for $123 on the Blackhawk website and the mag pouch is made by Maxpedition and retails for $25. The three Wilson Combat mags that came with the gun are the 47DA models and retail for $36 on their site. Best of all I was able to get the gun for $460 out the door including tax!

If you do the math I got about $256 worth of accessories and only paid $204 for the gun:evil::evil::evil:

As a precursor to the upcoming thread I did discover that the gun is a Remington Rand frame with a serial number that dates it to 1944, the inspector initials are actually "FJA". The Slide and barrel are both Colt but I'm not sure from what year.

Oh.. my... God... :Starts TwitchingALot: DIE!!!!!!!

I'd highly recommend you keep it just like that. Don't mod it.

Oh I don't plan on doing anything to it, I want to keep it just the way it is. At first I was a little concerned by the amount of wear, but now I think it adds more flavor to the gun. Besides, I already have a pretty 1911 (Colt XSE) I wanted this one for its historical aspects.

You see this green texture on my face? That's my insane, jealous rage. "Should I spend $450 on a Colt 1911 marked 'US Property'?" No one's dumb enough to ask that question. You're messing with us. Taunting people isn't funny!

Yeah, you may have been "taken to the cleaners" on that purchase. I'll tell you what, I'll send you $500 + shipping for it so you can recover ;)

If all the parts on that piece are Colt parts (or any of the other contracted manufactures such as Remington Rand, Singer sewing maching co.), even if the serial numbers don't match...That gun may be worth more then steveracer quoted...NICE!!!

Well at the very least its still worth more than I paid for it, so I'm glad I decided to not listen to the gun shop salesman. They were trying to convince me that it was all that great a deal. One of them was telling me how I could buy it and make changes to to the ejection port and change out the grips and so on to make it a better gun. One of the employees there was saying how the guy who left it on consignment included all that extra stuff to make the gun more desirable and move it faster.

Funny this is the second week in a row I've found a gun on consignment at that shop marked far less than the gun is actually worth (see link). I'm thinking I need to avoid this shop for a while I can't afford to keep finding all these impossible to ignore deals:uhoh:

Just goes to show that even if you like the people that work at your favorite gun shop, don't by any means consider them all experts. As to the fellow who put the gun on consignment, that just goes to show that if you have an old gun you want to get rid of then do some research before you sell it!

Either way I can't wait to take it out and give it a try, I'll let you all know how she shoots.
