Today I bought a 20 gauge Remington 870 Wingmaster. I don't know much about shotguns, but it looks like it is in good condition, but not very new. The serial number is 1911xxx The last x is really an x, and the first two are for the last two serial numbers. Would appreciate any information about this gun as to age and value. I paid $100.00 for it, and the guy I got it from said he bought it used 8 years ago.

Uh Oh. The x as the last serial number means it's unsafe. Tell you what, I'll send you a check covering what you paid and shipping to my FFl.....

J/K - :D - you got a smoking deal and I'm jealous. Erick or Dave should be able to help you out. Is there a letter(s) in front of the S/N ?

WW is still sleeping, and my copy of Kuhnhauser is in the bedroom, so I'll look up the model changes later, but....

Both the older large frame and the newer dedicated 20 gauge frame models in the WM versions run used around these parts at $250 to $350 for the most part.

On the barrel there should be letter codes. What are they?

You did very well.

on one side of the barrel there is OYY, and REP on the other.

The REP is a proof mark, IIRC.

Kuhnhausen says the lerge frame 20s were discontinued in 1972. The barrel marks indicate July of 1952 manufacture. A rather early one.

Fine shotgun, enjoy....
