Friend acquired one of these. Sold to him as in .22 LR but really .22WRF. It shoots both but bulges the .22LR. He also acquired a parts lot with a sentinel .22 WRF. Both cylinders are not caliber marked. Also double 9 is fluted and the other not. Question begs were any marked as to caliber and were any Double nines made with fluted cylinders?

Might want to check out the unblinkingeye.com/Guns/HSD9/hsd9.html website and see what they have to offer in the way of info on the Double Nine.

Sorry, I’m not following your train of thought and the question. The last two sentences contradict.

You say the Double Nine is fluted, then ask if Double Nines were made fluted.

Sorry in advance if I’m having a blonde Senior moment.

Sorry but confused as well, seems like some are and some arn't. Seems same with sentinels

Off the top of my head, I would guess that some, if not all, Double Nines were made with quick-change cylinders, one for 22 Long Rifle, and one for 22 Magnum. The revolver Vintovka describes probably has the 22 Magnum cylinder installed; that would explain why 22 Long Rifle cases bulge when fired in it. Probably one one cylinder (the 22 LR?) had flutes, while the other (the 22 Magnum?) did not, so the owner could tell them apart at a glance. This is all guesswork on my part, since I have no experience with Double Nines, nor any reference material about them at hand. But dual cylinders were a common thing with 22 revolvers that were designed from the start to have easily removable cylinders.

Is the frame on your friend's Double Nine made from aluminum or steel? They were made with both metals but I think only the steel frame variants came with the auxiliary .22 Magnum cylinder.

He has a steel frame. Said today he picked up a parts lot (less receiver) and it has a .22 LR with an unfluted cylinder so now has the "set".

Think aluminum frame was for early ones in .22 LR only. Same for Sentinel model. BTW we are still "cataloging" a late friends collection and i think i saw an early aluminum sentinel in one of the containers so will look when we get time.

Think i answered my own question. Thought id run an ebay search and found reprints of double 9 ads all the way up to 1980's. It seems the fluting was deleted on later to end of production on both calibers. My guess is only early to mid production of the double 9 are fluted. According to the old ad that includes all the variants like hi sierra, durango (?) and others. Finally a use for ebay!!!! Chime in if i'm wrong (common).
