I stopped at my local gun shop for Black Rifle Friday and they now stock suppressors and I'm very interested. Of course, I'll need an SBR stamp, as well.:D I have a couple AR's just need a good upper.
Is there a "sweet spot" for length?
Would a piston be better with the suppressor?

IMO a suppressed AR should have a 20 inch barrel and a SBR should be SHORT, like 10.5 or less. I wanted a SBR and went with a standard RRA 7 inch pistol upper and it runs just fine several hundred rounds with no problems at all. Piston guns are nice but the money diffrence doesn't add up to me for a semi auto rifle.

Keep in mind a lot of suppressor manufacturers won't honor your warranty if shot in less than a 10.5" barrel (may vary, check with the manufacturer when you choose a can).
This link contains a chart for barrel length and velocity/energy. http://counterstrikefox.freeservers.com/mv.htm
With the length of most cans a 10.5" barrel should get you in the overall-length neighborhood of a 16" AR. Also if you have .308/7.62 rifles you want to suppress, the 7.62 cans usually work well on 5.56 as well.
Good choice (SBR+Can), I think suppressors are practically mandatory for SBR AR-15s. They are LOUD!!!

It will depend on the can. I have a 7.5" upper, but as noted, there is only ONE can I can find that is warrantied for a 7.5" upper.

My local Class III/SOT stocks Ops Inc. Cans, so I had an upper cut down for that can specifically. It has to be 11.5" for the indexing collar for the ops inc cans to fit properly.

I have heard the Ops Inc vs The Gemtech Halo, and the Ops inc has a better sound to my ear. The Gemtech Halo mounts more universally, but the Ops Inc has a much smaller diameter hole because of the mounting setup, they're more concentric to the barrel. Exit diameter being smaller, keeps the noise down.

I had my 11.5" upper made by Adco Firearms. www.adcofirearms.com They have a great reputation in the AR circles. FWIW.
