Mods, before you delete this as 'off topic,' I suggest this relates to home safety, tactics, and personal and property security, safeguarding our loved ones and our guns, improving situational awareness!

This is currently on sale through 3/30/14 for $400 (normally $500).

Thinking of adding this 8 camera with DVR system to my security system. Great way to beef up security, and couple with your gun safes, lighting, situational awareness, dogs, etc.

Anyone have any experience with installation or use of this Q-See system?

Specific questions regarding ease of installation, quality and durability and whether this connects to Television rather than a monitor...

Or can someone recommend a ~$500 system that is significantly better?

Thanks.

That looks like a heck of a deal. The B&W cameras will see much better in the dark too. Even your better color cameras switch to B&W at night. If you're going to remote view you'll have to follow the directions carefully for port forwarding. You may also need to call you Internet provider for there IP address too. Usually 255.255.255 will work by default. A good resource for cable, connectors & camera power supply is active-vision.com
I have a system set up and love it!! Not that one, but it looks good and can't beat the price.

whether this connects to Television rather than a monitor...

It clearly says, "With the HDMI® port and included standard HDMI® cable, easily display video on any 19” or larger TV or monitor to take full advantage of the security system's clarity." It seems like it will connect to any 19" or larger TV or monitor.

It seems to be out of stock, so this may be moot at this point. These seem to go on sale every few months.

Usually 255.255.255 will work by default.
I can't imagine any situation where one would want to assign that as an IP address.

I forwarded the link to my oldest son who works in the security business. He designs and installs IP camera systems, mainly for government, commercial and industrial application.

I will let you know what he says.

Besides adding a camera power supply you should also use a ups that resets automatically. Some of the smaller ups units have a reset button that had to be pushed. Otherwise your system will go down If you're away and remote viewing.
I use the 16 ch EverFocus dvr and not familiar with the features of the unit at Costco. Most of them also have digital motion detection grids which can mask out tree limbs, cars going down road etc, while making other areas active. While it's all being recorded at a slower rate fps when motion detected in active zone it'll speed up for clarity. This saves disc space. It can also be set up to send email with vid clip when motion detected.
There usually a way to save video on flash drive or burn to cd/ DVD disc if it has a burner. It may also have a output for spot monitor so you can view in another location in house at same time

Go to tigerdirect.com and check out their Q-See brand. They are better quality and you can get an awesome setup for less than $300 with plenty of functions. They have higher priced versions with more features as well.

Just curious, are you going to use this just for live time observation or recording while you aren't present? If used for recording you might want to think about upgrading your cameras for better facial resolution if LE is going to use it as evidence. I've seen many of these units that don't play back as well as when you view them live..............
