Have you had a chance to check out the Houston Chronicle's new policy on selling firearms in the classified ads? You're going to love this. I quote:

"As of May 1, 2003 the Houston Chronicle will no longer accept classified adverstiments for handguns by unlicensed dealers."

It continues with:

"The Chronicle will contnue to accept ads for long guns, rifles & shotguns except those ads pertaining to assault weapons or any guns generally recognized as assault or military-type weapons. Ads for these assault weapons on any kind are not accepted."

What in the hell happened to the Great State of Texas? Furthermore, what's with licensed dealers not being able to advertise any of their "generally recognized assault or military-type" weapons, whatever THAT means.

not sure but i don't think that the Chronicle is Locally owned....

this may very well be a result of a "higher up ruling" at the owning/controling syndicate.

even if it IS local owned, it's not exactly known for being overly conservative. i'm not a native texan, so i may get beat over this... but to me Houston is almost if not more liberal than Chapel Hill NC (home of UNC) was. and newspapers tend to reflect the veiws not of the majority of the populace but of the most powerful local political groups.

personally i don't shop the want ads for guns, but i DO near about have the major three shops i use on speed dial to see what has come in on consignment/trade/etc.:D

The Barnacle was bought by the Hearst Corp. in 1986, and boasts about the fact that Houston is the largest "one-newspaper" city in the US. I'm not out to beat anyone up, just want to clarify, but I will take exception to the idea that Houston is a "liberal" town.

As with any major city, it has been liberalized by an influx of migrants from other regions around the country and world. In addition to that, the residents of the city proper are by in large more liberal than the surrounding communities (you don't have to look past the mayor and city council to realize this). However, if you look at the surrounding suburban communities that make up the overal MSA, I would wager Houston is the most conservative of the top ten MSA's in the US.

I am disgusted by this move on the part of the Chronicle, but not at all surprised. The only time I buy this paper is on Sunday, and then only if they have a good stack of coupons in the middle that I want. I may now even reconsider that purchase....

Argh, that's annoying.

Some parts of Houston are very liberal...that's why I like living in Sugar Land, about 30 miles southwest. :) If you think Houston is liberal, check out Austin in the downtown and campus area.

SAW IT

:cuss:
saw the paper, if i had a subscription i'd cancle it and tell them why. i will not spend another penny for one of their papers.
i to live outside of the city but i work in this craphole, sorry to those who do live here but when your police chief leaves to take a better job up north and then comes back to be elected mayor ya'll have some serious problems!:banghead:

we the proud people in Harris county Texas, send more people to Death row than any other county in the good ol' U.S.A. :neener:
more than most states actually, I am offended you would call us Liberial :cuss:

I think that the town of houston is rather liberal in some areas. Look at the Mayor and Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee. THey didnt get elected by conservatives.

Don't disagree with you, Jeep, that some parts of the city are rather Lib, but as a whole, the region is pretty conservative. In contrast to Jackson Lee, you have Rep. Tom Delay on the other side of town.

I have lived in Michigan, New Mexico, New York City, Oklahoma and a couple of cities in Texas and I was shocked to read something like THAT in a HOUSTON, TX newspaper. If I read that in a rag in MI or NY, so what. Par for the course, but HOUSTON?

poof...

you're right the surrounding area IS very conservative, at times painfully so. but sadly it is the so called "imigrated liberals" that are becomeing more and more vocal. and as stated Hearst Corp owns the paper. and trust me it DON'T reflect local veiws most times.

I hate it I hate it I hate it I hate it I hate it!

I hate every step, every move toward restricting our rights by ANYBODY.

That said, there's always the Thrifty Nickel. I have seen gun ads there.
