How low can I go? (charge weight)

Oh, and while bulky, it's fast, and is best suited to big calibers that are not necked down or not necked down much. It could certainly work in the Grendel though. Just have to work it up carefully. Or medium bore that are also not necked way down. Speer shows a lot of reduced loads with AA 5744.

"Over bore" stuff like a lot of the fat for the caliber cases to in vogue these days would be trickier due to 5744s speed.

TB won't make a deer load in 6.5 Grendel, but would be low recoil fun to get him started.

Oh, I wasn’t thinking about using it for hunting, just getting him acclimated to the rifle. I imagine he won’t be able to tell the difference between them and the full charge round he fires when he kills his first deer.

I appreciate all the discussion. I loaded 9 cartridges with 26 grains. It still mostly fills the little Grendel case. I'm going to shoot them myself first. We'll see how it goes. Just to be clear, I do not expect this to be a load I use beyond those 9. I just wanted to know if that was known to be unsafe for any reason. If I were to shoot any volume, I'd take the suggestions to use a different powder. My only intention is to soften the transition from .22LR to 6.5 Grendel, and I think I can do that with the first couple shots because transitioning up to the book starting loads for Grendel is not a high recoil experience. I don't expect those first couple shots to be accurate. They'll probably be into water jugs at 25 yards. I'm expecting to move up to upper-end Grendel loads with 100 gr. TTSX for hunting.

Welp, no data in the Western Powders manual for 5574 in 6.5 Grendel. Perhaps not such a good idea from me after all!

Not sure this info is useful in any way. In the past I've made thousands of "Mexican match" 7.62x39. I used all types of Russian ammo as the base, replacing the bullets with 125 grain .303 Sierra Pro Hunters and IMR4895 from 24.0 to 24.5 grains. Worked great. That load reduced the recoil to very close to 5.56 recoil level.

The 4895 powders can be downloaded a lot safely. Those powders are worth a look. If I were to do it again I'd use H4895 instead due to better temperature stability.

Minimum is the point just brfore the bullet doesn't exit the barrel . You can't be serious . I'm shooting below lister load for the bullet I'm using , check for yourself . IMR 4064 with a Sierra 168gr HPBT MatchKing bullet with a charge of 40.8 , I only shoot benchrest at 200 yards my groups are a consistent 1/2" , I know for sure my barrel isn't 200 yards long. And my barrel isn't pointing at the sky to hit the target 200 yards away. I would lower the charge .3 below listed until you find what your looking for , light recoil I would go first with increased rifle weight , then charge weight same for accuracy but through in a good trigger .

I'd still invest in/use TrailBoss no matter what.
As a plinking powder, it is unsurpassed -- and safe.

I took this advice. One boy psyched himself out about recoil, so I picked up a 9 oz bottle of Trail Boss. I used the method described in the .PDF to come up with a light load. I didn't chrono it, but I'd say it felt about like a .22 WMR. The boys worked up the courage to try a few shots with H335. They were fine with it, but the rifle moves enough they can't see the impact in the 1.5X scope. I'll probably use Trail Boss for a few more sessions. Besides that, it will work great for my wife.

I've heard of (never witnessed) just as im sure many others here as well have about "secondary explosive effect" (a light load causing a dangerous explosion). Its never been duplicated in a test lab and can not be recreated upon request. Ive loaded handgun rounds down to stupidly low levels and havent had anything negative happen, never even had one stick in the bore. My understanding is that it could be caused by the projectile starting into the rifling and then stopping with nowhere for the pressure to go. Just a comment from the peanut gallery. If i was going at this id try a relatively soft non jacketed bullet thats sized properly at .001 over bore diameter and push it down until it youre happy. It sounds like you got something with the trail boss, but its always fun to try other things. I mentioned in a seperate post about a load i run with a hot glue cast swc on top of a primer only 357 mag case, thats just fun and cheap- not too effective however.
