how much is too much?

I have a Thunderer that was given to me by Bill Carlisle, the last train robber.
It sat under his cash register in his tourist trap business in Laramie until he sold everything and moved to be with his daughter in his final years.
It has a cracked forcing cone.

one only need look at some of the majour online selling sites to know high prices are more likely scamful wishful thinking

check out Amazon..... sometimes you'll see something listed for x100 of its true value, in the hopes SOMEONE with no knowledge, or an autobuy, will pay for it

and firearms are not immune to that

I don’t even bother looking at high priced collectibles. I should just say “collectibles”. My “high price” is probably not a collector’s “high price”.
Most of my envy or admiration for guns are guns that could be attainable by me. I would much rather look at the weekly gem that @Mark_Mark comes up with than a gun of notable history or ownership.

I can say that I am totally amazed at the number of guns the Dalton Gang apparently owned and carried. I am also amazed at the number of people there are that say their gun was carried by a member of the Dalton Gang with a straight face. ;)

As a relative of the Dalton Gang member! My Model 10’s we carried by them!

I’m so GUN BROKE!

There is no way that gun would be worth 25K unless it was once owned by a famous person or historical figure. If it were 100% brand new and unfired I still doubt it would be worth 25K.
Collectors of museum quality pieces will pay crazy prices. Personally I wouldn't shell out half a million for something that will just collect dust in a locked display case guarded by sharks with laserbeams on their heads. Guns are meant to be shot not just gawked at over high priced coffee. I have an interest in classic/vintage firearms but 25,000+ is too rich for my blood. If I am going to pay an arm and a leg then I darn well expect to be able to load and shoot it at a target.
If you shoot a 99+% gun, a high end collectable, and wear off one percent of the finish, you just cut the value of said gun by half. On certain high end collectables, each percent point of the original finish over 97% can double the value of the piece.

I have such a gun, a C-96 Mauser with matching shoulder stock. It is a 99% gun. It has never been fired after leaving the factory in 1913. The inside of the gun is full of cosmoline. It was examined by Mr. Simpson at Collector"s Guns at Galesburg, Ill. He is a foremost expert on Lugers but he knows a thing or two about C-96s as well. He agreed with my assessment.

If I were to clean up that thing and shoot it ten times, It would lose half it's value. No way I'm doing that.

Sorry for the upside down pics. Puter is drunk again...

Not that I'd spend whichever price is being asked, but is it $25K or 1/4 million dollars according to Post 1?
