I just happen to have a handful of Powerbelts left over from when I had an in-line. Has anyone tried them out of a barrel made for patch and balls (i.e. 1:66 twist?) I'll probably experiment but just wondered if anyone else has tried this.

Welcome to THR Blackjack.

Noticed you were from Orlando. I was in Buffalo Bills the other day (where I very rarely get to) and told him of THR. Hopefully, he join... he would be a much welcomed addition. If you into BP it is THE place in Orlando to go to.

Most assuredly so, Gunny. I get by there two or three times a week just to see what might have snuck in new since my last visit. Also the home of the most knowledgeable folks on all types of BP in the Orlando area. I got my Lyman GPR there and am planning to buy a Pennsylvania longrifle as soon as the funds come together. It would be great to have Rich on here to share his considerable knowledge.

Are you planning on trying the powerbelts in your great plains rifle?
If so please let us know how it turns out. I'm building a GPR right now, and even though its main use will be paper punching where a patch an ball would be fine, I'd like to know what it would do with sabots, or maxis.
Don't know what a finished rifle costs, but there was an add in the kit for my gpr for exchangeable barrels. You can switch calibers and twist rates, fast or slow for about $180 ( I think, don't have the add with me right now) They may not be browned yet though.

Unfortunately I no longer have a GPR but I do have a Kentucky Rifle that seems to be about 10 years old, made from a kit. It has a 1:66 twist and is excellent with patched round balls. Yesterday I tried it with powerbelts and found the accuracy to be just fine--consistently within the kill zone on a deer at 100yds--and no less accurate than the round balls. The rifle has noticably more recoil with that 348gr bullet coming out of it with 70gr of FFg, compared to my normal target load of a .490 ball, a wonderlube patch and 50gr of FFg or FFFg.
