I am trying to sporterize a Nagant. (Well, I can't restore them ALL) The one I've decided to update has a permenent looking bayonet lug. Will it spread and come off the front? I really can't see any dividing line between the barrel and the lug, but then my eyes aren't what they once were. (Hence, the sporter bolt and scope) I bought the bent bolt body and put in the guts, because I didn't like the idea of trying to tap the cut off bolt. Works great, and now I've put on a scout pistol scope, same reason, I don't want to try to tap right at the chamber. (Shudder) Now, how about the lug, other than trying to grind it off.? :uhoh: . (Again, shudder!)

Good luck, they are put on the barrel by 800 lb gorrillas with Sledge hammers. If you remove the entire lug, you will also be removing the front sight base. You could just grind off the ears :barf: but thats your choice

I've had no troubles just using my M-44 as is, with the bayonet out. The lugs make a nice hand hold. Frankly I don't understand why you didn't just pop an M-38 in a sporter stock. It would have been a lot less trouble.

M-44

Cosmoline: Good idea, but I would have to buy the M-38. I have two M-44's and a beautiful laminated 91-30 (Two football fields of barrel. I mean, Reeeaaalllyyy long) Course I should be able to get an M-38 for under $100 bucks, if SHE says it's ok. :D I'm just not sure I want another one. I'm only trying to sporter the M-44 with really crappy wood. I may end up leaving the lug on if I can't find an 800 pound gorilla.

I've already been through this problem and i will only say one thing. Grind the damn ears off. You will understand what im saying if you go the other way. :cuss: :banghead:
