HUNTERS' VENISON DONATIONS HIT 230 MILLION MEALS

Sun Nov 14, 4:19 AM ET Sports - New York Post

By KEN MORAN

FOR years, hunters quietly have helped the needy by donating part of their harvest to food banks throughout New York and the rest of the country.

On the other side of the coin, you have animal rights groups like PETA and HSUS who raise millions of dollars, most of which is spent on salaries for officers and publicity for their organizations.

Between the Venison Donation Coalition and SCI's Sportsmen Against Hunger program, more than 230 million meals have been donated to the hungry.

The Venison Donation Coalition was established in 2000 to help organizations that wanted to begin or enhance a venison donation program in their area. Many statewide and local sportsmen groups are involved, including the New York State Conservation Council, the Western New York Safari Club, Westchester County Bowhunters, and sportsmen federations in Columbia, Greene, Dutchess and Schenectady counties.

In four years, more than 250,000 pounds of venison have been donated, processed and distributed through New York's Food Bank network. That equates to 1 million servings of venison.

Participating processors can be found on DEC's Web site at www.dec.state.ny.us, by contacting the Venison Donation Coalition at (866) 862-3337, or by visiting their Web site at www.VenisonDonation.com. The Safari Club International Foundation's second annual Sportsmen Against Hunger Week, tomorrow through Saturday, calls on sportsmen across North America to share their hunting and fishing bounty with the hungry in their communities.

Those with questions about where to take their harvests for donation can access the SCI Foundation's online databases, at www.sci-foundation.org/humanitarian/sah/, for licensed game processors and relief organizations.

Any meat processor or hunger relief organization willing to participate in Sportsmen Against Hunger should call Allyson Garcia at SCI at (520) 620-1220, ext. 480.

This year, the SCI Foundation is providing hunters an extra incentive to give as part of Sportsmen Against Hunger. By donating 5 pounds or more of professionally processed meat directly to a relief organization, and using an official Sportsmen Against Hunger "Share Nature's Bounty" donation form, sportsmen will receive an automatic entry to win one of 50 Sako 75 rifles. For more information on the Sportsmen Against Hunger program, call (877) 877-3265 or visit www.sci-foundation.org.

Great article, though he should have pointed out that PETA spends a lot of time and money trying to thwart hunters for the hungry's efforts.

IIRC they sued Hunters for the Hungry some years ago when they tried to make use of thousands of geese that were exterminated in Fairfax Co. VA. The Geese rotted while PETA sued.

You do understand

That the two groups have seperate & distinct goals? This is like comparing those in favor of abortion with those that are not. PETA is about the treatment of animals NOT feeding the poor. PETA is mainly about awareness and education, hence the large advertising budget- that's like a claim that a car company uses it's money to build and sell cars- how shocking!!!! The Director of PETA Ingrid Newkirk takes less than 50K a year in salary to run a multi-million dollar organization? Can NRA execs claim that?
I get so tired of complaints about the press being anti-gun and biased and yet we do the same thing and use the spin of the big bad boogie man (PETA) to scare hunters into donating or joining the NRA. Hunting will continue as a by product of what the Second Amendment is actually about- the right of citizens to own guns, for defense of the country in a militia, personal defense OR hunting....
We need to get over the animal groups as being the enemy and recognize who it really is- anti-gunners, gun owners & hunters who don't get involved or donate/join pro 2A organizations and politicians that only support us for our votes and don't have the balls to strongly and loudly be pro gun while getting them.

PETA is mainly about awareness and education

:barf:

What's next? Reclassify bugs as animals then outlaw cars since they are mass murderers? Bugs are people too huh?

I care less about PETA's feelings than those of any animal... Or even a bug. :fire:

I'm having a little problem with the arithmetic here...

How does a million bambi quarter-pounders equate to 230 million meals?

...A million bambi quarter-pounders through New York alone, and only in the past four years.

There are lots of cities, and hunters for the hungry has been operational for a lot longer than four years :)

I didn't see anything about the NRA in the article. Did the link have more in it then the part they posted?

1 million servings in NY in 4 years. 230 million meals for the Venison Donation Coalition and SCI's Sportsmen Against Hunger program overall. Verstehe?

As for awareness and education, Ingrid Newkirk did teach me that 'A rat is a pig is a dog is a boy.'

I don't think you get it . . . .

PETA is about the treatment of animals NOT feeding the poor.

PETA is anti-hunter, PETA is animal rights above people rights . . . . . so yes I do get it - they are the enemy.

If 1000 monkeys have to die for my ingrown toenail medicine (little exaggeration but you get the point) . . . . sorry dude but I am ok with that, dog lover that I am.

They are kissing cousins of the gun grabber crowd.

I think you are missing my point

Yes PETA etc. are against hunting. My point is that WE complain about media bias and distortion/lies towards guns but it's ok when it is done to the other side?

Peta

Spends their time and money trying to brainwash children into not drinking milk because it comes from a cow.

They want insects to have the same rights as a dog. Thereby making agriculture much more difficult since slug and insect erradication would be illegal.

Animals should not be used by the military because they did not join the force voluntarily.

Would rather spend millions of taxpayer dollars castrating deer populations to keep down populations instead of allowing hunters to pay a fee to shoot them. That fee goes to maintaining the forest and offsets the taxpayer cost, plus the meat can be given away to the hungry.

If PETA had thier way, there would be no fast food like KFC or burger king whoppers, 0 of the 233 million meals would have been served to the needy, and any form of hunting or fishing would be illegal.

I do believe it is you, CT that needs to see the real truth. Anti-gunners want your guns, PETA wants it to be illegal to hunt or fish. If you want to be truthful, PETA is seen as more of a threat to hunters and fishermen than the anti-gunners since most anti-gun efforts are not towards shotguns so hunters feel ok, but PETA wants to stop all hunting uses of bows, guns, black powder rifles and even the deadly fishing pole.
PETA is more often seen as a threat to hunters than the anti-gun group is. IF your only concern for a gun is hunting and PETA does away with hunting, then to a hunter the option is to move or sell the guns and give up hunting.

How much would the gun-rights community suffer if a large group of hunters had to give up hunting?

Environmenatlists too

Another group are Environmenatlists.

We could ignore them and they could simply make gun ranges either too expensive to go to or operate with costly lead contamination rules. Or have a law passed that only allows target shooting at environmentally approved ranges.

PETA and the Greens are not a major concern to the gun rights community, but they are still a threat.

The article never mentions PETA or the NRA, I imagine you could post an article about PETA, and how they are unfairly treated, but I would need to see some proof before I would agree with you.

PETA Quotes:

On Newkirk's view of Seeing Eye dogs
"She regards the use of Seeing Eye dogs as an abdication of human responsibility and, because they live as 'servants' and are denied the companionship of other dogs, she is wholly opposed to their use."

On PETA supporting violence
"Its leaders wholeheartedly defend and encourage guerilla groups like the Animal Liberation Front. In fact, Bruce Friedrich, one of PETA's most prominent leaders, says in a speech readily available on the Internet [CCF caught and recorded Friedrich saying this at a 2001 convention] 'I think it would be a great thing if, you know, all these fast food outlets and these slaughterhouses and these laboratories and the banks that fund them exploded tomorrow.'"

Newkirk's last will and testament
"That the meat of my body, or a portion thereof, be used for a human barbeque...my skin, or a portion thereof, be removed and made into leather products...my feet be removed and umbrella strands or other ornamentation be made from them...my eyes be removed, mounted and delivered to the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency..."

Nancy Reagan and PETA are battling it out over the image of her late husband.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals was planning to use Ronald Reagan's picture in a campaign promoting vegetarianism as a way to prevent Alzheimer's disease.

"Win one for the Gipper" read the ad, which showed a smiling photo of the 40th president.

"Animal fats DOUBLE your risk of Alzheimer's."

PETA president Ingrid Newkirk recently wrote to Nancy Reagan, outlining the research that supports those conclusions.

Nancy Reagan not only didn't send back a letter of support; her people fired off a cease-and-desist letter.

"Discontinue any use of President Reagan's name, signature, quote, image or likeness," came a missive from Kirby Elizabeth Hanson, Director of Business Development for the Ronald Reagan Foundation.

"You have no authority, license or consent from President and Mrs. Reagan (or their legal representatives or licensee) for such use."

This little quote train was brought to you to give you a basic idea of what PETA's really all about. They're nutjobs. They aren't about education! In fact, they'll use the worst junk science to prove their point, and never apologize for the lies.

Ok have your bash fest

sound more like the wailing of the Brady Bunch. I just find it strange how we criticize the other side for distortions yet the ones in the above article are ok. Check the public records for the salaries etc or just take it for granted everything you read on the net is gospel.
My point was about why is ok for US to do the same thing as THEM when it comes to spreading gossip and rumors and outright untruths?
Piling on every reason you hate animal protection groups is far off track from invalidating my point. I'm not participating in a bash fest over this so knock yourselves out high fivin', feel free to high five and say you win because I'm dropping the thread whatever, Saying Sara Brady is actually Satan doesn't make it so. You have to admire and understand the enemy and their motivations and adopt what they do better (if it's on the up and up).

If I quote what Ms. Newkirk says, where is the distortion?

If you glanced quickly, the boxes looked like a McDonald's Happy Meal promotion: big cheerful letters, a drawing of the grinning clown; but then you looked closely, it read "Unhappy meal" and Ronald McDonald was swinging an ax. When you opened the box, you didn't find a hamburger, there were plastic animals painted with fake blood. The man who runs McDonald's denounced the protests as "tasteless and dishonest." But when the woman who runs PETA, Ingrid Newkirk, looks back on it today, she says McDonald's was on the ropes:
"Just the very idea that we had taken their trademark Happy Meal and converted it into an Unhappy meal frightened them. Suddenly they didn't want children coming near the restaurant where they would see PETA protestors standing in the kiddy playgrounds with the Unhappy Meal in hand. That sent a chill up McDonald's spine."

So what if she takes less than 50k to run PETA, how much did the McDonalds stunt cost? How much in legal fees?
What did they accomplish? I still eat at McDonalds and still eat hamburgers.
PETA is mainly about awareness and education, hence the large advertising budget- that's like a claim that a car company uses it's money to build and sell cars- how shocking!!!!

If PETA wanted to make a real difference they would use thier money to find homes for dogs and cats. Buy land to house unwanted animals. No they use expensive publicity stunts to try to scare the public into doing what they want.
Yours is actually claiming that a car company uses it's money to scare the people off of trains and planes by showing and promoting accidents and crashes. To get others to buy and use only their car.

A bloody Ronald McDonald holding an axe pictured on a Happy Meal is NOT awareness and education. It is sick and disturbing. They are below even Brady Bunch's lies.

Again, please feel free to show how the quote above are wrong. It should be a matter of public record, and be fairly easy to do. When we complain about the Brady Bunch we support our complaints with Facts, but nobody ever debunks the supposed lies from Anti-Peta people.

You know, I just have to post again because I just remembered a local incident...

WHen I was in college a couple animal rights protestors dressed up as cows and picketed a local fast food joint.

At the end of the day the manager came out and gave them free (meatless) meals and thanked them for their time.

Apparently people thought they were promoting some new sandwhich or sale, and the restaurant had a record day.

isnt PETA the wack jobs that were buying lobsters from resturants and grociery stores and "setting them free" back to the ocean? :D because they screamed in pain when you dropped them in to a pot of boiling water?mmmmm makes me hungry!also they did picket a local KFC, mostly collage kids, i showed my support by buying a bucket and eating it in front of them :p

What is dishonest or misleading? Author says here are hunters trying to do a good thing and here is PETA trying to block it. He takes a shot at them over their salaries and self promotion.

What in that is false? Now it may be objectionable to you as a PETA member but dishonest and misleading . . . . well you haven't made that case at all.

By the way, notice that unlike your buddies on the DU, we (the terrible pro-2a gun people) will actually discuss issues and not have you banned and kicked off the board simply for disagreeing.

We do ask that you make your case though . . . .

Central Texas, a direct quote from Ingrid Newkirk, not too long after she came to the U.S. from England, is, "A rat is a pig is a dog is a boy."

This is rational thought?

Were she to have the power to pass laws:

No eating of meat--therefore no animal husbandry or hunting.

No use of animals for wool or mohair, nor for milk--they would have to restrained in order that these be made available, and by her own words it's slavery.

No pets.

Now, this is what she's on record as having said in public.

Wayne whatever-his-name-is who has been (maybe still is) the head of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has made the same sorts of statements.

If you call this "educational", you have a much looser definition of that word than do I.

I can only see it as irrational thinking. Unsane. It has no more intellectual competency than for somebody to tell me I must believe in Islam instead of Christianity, or be a Wiccan instead of a Buddhist--by fiat.
