May I Be the first to say I was a 9mm Hater! I was introduced to shooting by my dear old father the Marine. When it came to pistols the smallest caliber for defensive purposes was the 357 magnum and if you preferred an autoloader it was 45ACP. The philosophy being to use enough gun to end the fight as quickly as possible. Now I still agree with this philosophy. However in my young and impressionable mind, I decided that certain calibers were a waste of my time.
Time went on and I began to build my own collection and it consisted of 45s, 44s, a 40 s&w that I bought because the price was too good to pass up, and 357 Mags. Well ammo prices have steadily risen over the years, so it started to get more and more expensive to keep my guns fed. I decided i needed something a little cheaper to shoot. Well despite my bias against them I decided to purchase a P95 in 9mm. I've always been fond of Ruger since I bought my first handgun a P97 years ago, so I figured I would stay with a platform I was familiar with. The price didn't hurt either.
Well readers I must say this P95 is one very fine pistol in my humble opinion. My first time shooting it I was able to keep all my shots except one in the black on a standard pistol target at 25 feet. I was blown away its like this pistol was made just for me. Don't get me wrong I'm a fairly good shot, but this pistol just made it so easy. Plinking cans and informal shooting is just a blast (pardon the pun) with this
9. It just seems to put the round where I want instinctively. Readers I love by larger pistol especially my 45s, but I've found myself picking up the 9 more and more. Just knowing that if I do my part it will place my shots where I want them is a confidence booster. After all shot placement is King when it comes to self defense.
I can also practice a whole lot more with it since ammo is cheaper than 45 or 40. And I'm pretty confident that 16 rounds of 124 gr. +P Speer Gold Dots will do the job if called upon. People I know I'm long winded but this pistol impressed me and opened my eyes to a respectable caliber that I once thought inferior. Through all this I still revert back to my beloved father's teachings. If something goes bump in the night, I will reach for my trusted 45 or my 12 gauge shotgun. After all I want enough gun to end the situation as quickly as possible if need be. But if I find myself in a similar situation with nothing but my P95, I won't feel the least bit undergunned. Pardon my ramblings and Thanks for reading.

Parents still love their kids, even when they are ugly. :D

Seriously though, congrats on your purchase. A P95 wouldn't be my first choice, but it's a rugged and reliable firearm with a great company to back it up.

As to 9mm, there's a reason why, after 100 years, it's still the most popular handgun cartridge in the world.

The Ruger P95 is like the little secret of the handgun world. I have found very, very few people that have shot them that don't speak well of them.

Mine was my first handgun I ever bought. I did a lot of research but ordered online before trying it and luckily picked a good one :). That was 8-9 years ago but I still have the gun and still like it. I've got 6 different 9mm's in my collection including a Glock 17 and the Ruger has actually exhibited better reliability than the Glock.

Ruger P95DC was the second handgun I ever bought. I got it used (no idea how used). I've put a few tens-of-thousands of rounds through it. Only things I've ever needed to do were replace springs and magazines.

Great guns.

It is a great gun but if you limp wrist it she will give you fits. For some reason my wife can not shoot light loads out of it.

I have an older one that I use for training new shooters at the clubs that I belong to. It has the huge de-cocker levers and the slide stop that sticks way out on the side. It is very soft shooting and easy to operate. Everyone who has used it can pull the slide back easily which is not the case for many of my other pistols. It has had many thousands of cheap steel case ammo and lead reloads through it and it shoots as well now as it did when I bought it years ago. I bought it used for $200.00 with a barrel so leaded up that the rifling was barely visible. Cleaned the lead out and it has been a great shooter ever since.

IMO it is a great gun for a great price. Hope you enjoy yours

I love our P95 as well! Like you said, and my uncle told me a week before it was bought (no relation I'm sure! :D ) that they just shoot and plink very well. It's a quality piece at a great price, and the trigger is very very good for what you pay. It's a no frills gun, but a NIB, US made, 9mm, 15 round, good trigger, easy maintenance and number 1, reliable handgun for less than $350 after taxes? Count me in. When I go to get my CCW and I am in a too tight a spot financially to buy a lighter gun for CCW like a S&W M&P or G19, I would feel fine with the P95. It's my go to HD gun right now. Less firepower than an AK, but that's what my brother and his Saiga are for, I can use my other hand to call 911 and get my siblings and Mom to safety if Dad's still at work.

I was getting a group under 6" with rapid fire right at my point of aim at 40 yards. :D At'll do!

The P95 is a great pistol for sure. I would not hesitate to buy one if the budget was tight. Congrats on yours.

They don't have to be pretty for me. I just want them to go Bang when I ask and hit what I aim at.

W.E.G.

Seriously?

Last time I went to the range I packed a PKM, an RPD, a Glock 21, and a Ruger P95DC.

Maybe I'm just low class. ;-)

I too love my P95. It was my first handgun, and the gun I learned to shoot pistol on. I haven't taken her out to the range recently, it's probably time for some P95 love.

If loving my Rugers makes me low class, then so be it! LOL! !!!!

P95 was my first pistol too. It has always been 100% reliable. My only "problem" is the hammer pin walks out slightly if you work the slide without a magazine installed, an easy work-around: put mag in or push the pin back in with a finger. The only other things I'd change is I'd have more texture on the grip and I'd reverse the safety so "safe" would be up. But as a decocker, the current direction of operation works fine.

Mine is the newer version P95 that has the manual safety/decocker. I actually like a manual safety on a pistol. just another layer of security. Sure, the first few times I took her to the range I forgot to trip the safety a few times. But now its second nature. As soon as I touch the gun my thumb goes to the safety. I would still like to find one of the older P95DC pistols with the decocker only. That's the same configuration my KP97DC has. By the way I almost bought another new P95 today!!!!!

Ruger quit making the decock only P-series pistols in 2007 IIRC. Since then any P-series pistols they have made have a Decocker/Safety.

I got to shoot a P95 at a rental range once & I liked it. It's grip was actually a little thinner than that of my old .40 caliber P94. I definitely wouldn't feel undergunned with one.

Well now and then I see a P95 for sale in a pawn shop. $250 or so.

Yes it's a great deal at that price. They are quite reliable and will do anything a Glock or S&W MP will do.

I try to point out to my friends when I see such a deal but they turn their noses up at them. It's their loss cause I know they are fine guns.

The P95 was introduced in 1996. We have a pair of them, one with a blued slide, the other stainless. Both have had tens of thousands of rounds through each, without failure.

Both are early models, a bot slipperier than the latest iteration, and have Hogue Hand-alls as a result.

I find it amusing that anyone feels the P series are blocky and ugly, but would find Glocks appealing. Then again, most HK pistols look ungainly to me, too.

I'm guessing that their price tags are high enough to enjoy snob appeal.

In my collection are a Ruger P85(pre-Mk.I), a KP90, a KP97DC, a KP94, a pair of P95s, a P345, an SR9, and an SR9c. None of these guns has given me a problem. They are accurate, reliable, and durable.

I've never known a criminal to look at the gun pointed at him, and say "man, that's ugly, I'm going to have to attack you".
