I need information on my 38. Special smith&wesson 6 shot, squar grip has Engravings of a dove on the side and a star. On top of the Barrel it says smith&wesson spring field mass. Us.A. Patented oct. 8.01.dec.17.01.feb.6.06.sept.14.09.dec.29.14 and Serial number on grip 337790

With that high a number, probably a Military & Police Model, made around 1920.

Any further information, or confirmation of the above, will require some good pictures.

Oy, I can't add much to the IDing but that's actually pretty. I'm not a big fan of engraved pistols but that one is really really nice.

I'm no expert, but that looks much like the " pawn shop" engraving that was applied to a bunch of 38/44 HD's sent to Wolf & Klahr Hardware down in Texas in the 30's.
SW lawmen snatched them up and they very collectible these days.
