First let me point out that I lack any personal experience with IAI 1911s, but I did do some preliminary research on them before I bought my Kimber.
According to the gun rags I used to read up on the pistol I was looking at (M5000?), they are excellent values for the money... certainly not to be placed in the Llama camp in terms of QC and materials.
However, the articles I gleaned this from were from magazines several years old. I don't know if things have changed since then.
My first pistol was an AMT longslide, which became IAI. It worked fine, although they have a spotty reputation for quality, materials and out of spec parts. Plus, they are officially out of business.
If you want that potential headache, stick with Rock Island or Chuckie D pistol, which are about the same price. At least you have some factory recourse with those.
Edited to add:
We are talking about IAI (Irwindale Arms, Inc.) of Irwindale and/or El Monte, CA, correct? The previous post seems to be confused with IMI (Israel Military Industries)
Southern Raider, you're spot on... I'm indeed thinking of the Israeli flavor of 1911 that definately hadn't anything to do with Arcadia Machine and Tool.
Thanks
IAI stands for Israel Arms International. They are located in Texas and I have never known of any Israeli connection. They have often changed their names, but that was their most recent name. They also marketed an FAL rifle as well as an M1 Carbine. My guess is they chose Israel to give them some panache an name association (or perhaps outright confusion) with IMI. Probably in the same vein as Rock Island Armory.
I guess there are two IAIs...the one above (Israel Arms) and the one of AMT/IAI/Galena Industries fame. I suspect that the original poster is looking at a stainless 1911 with an El Monte or Irwindale address.
