I have had my mind made up that I would either be purchasing a Walther P99 or XD-9 for my next handgun. I'm even making a trip to Raleigh tomorrow to shoot both guns at an indoor range.

So today I go over to the local gunshop just to see what they have, and sure enough no XD-9 or P99 in stock. I'm about to leave when the owner asks is I've considered the G17. Well I actually hadn't considered the Glock. So he starts telling me all about the Glock and I actually really liked the way it felt in my hand. So I want to know if the deal he offered was a good one:

the 17 is a used 3rd gen, in 90-95% condition (a few scratches on the slide and a couple marks in the polymer frame, the plastic sight had a mark on it), comes with the box and two 10 round mags. The guy offered $400 out the door which would be roughly $375 before tax.

Does this sound like a good deal assuming I'll like the Glock as much as the XD or P99 once I've shot all 3?

Out the door, $400 is a good deal ;) It may depend on what state you live in, but that appears to be a nice deal! :D

If you would like a Glock, and the G17 isn't too big for your intended application, I would be all over that. Very, very fair deal.

I actually dont like that deal:( ..He stated there was damage to the slide, frame and sight. I got my GLOCK nib 475.00 and out the door. Id rather spend the extra bucks to get something in pristine condition rather than something that has defects on every major part of the exterior. Im not trying to flame:fire: at all but did want to give another way to look at it.

Don Lu, that's sort of what I was thinking, basically I'm settling for the not-so-perfect piece but saving $100 or so....but then I think it's a Glock, a work-horse gun that's made to take a beating....however, I always take very good care of my things and all my existing guns are in excellent condition....I just don't know

Settle/setteling,IMHO should not be a word used when purchasing a gun, go ahead spend the extra money and you wont even remember spending the extra 75.00-100.00 next year, but if you do your part you gun will still look brand new next year:p .

In my experience the Glock sights need replacing with aftermarket sights if you want to be able to shoot at 25 metres. The XD sights are good and the P99 sights are in between. You may want to factor that into your calculations.

That being said, I have a G17 with Heinie slant pro sights and a 3.5 pound connector. It's fired over 20,000 rounds in IPSC competition, as long as I clean it everry 1500 rounds or so it's fine. The only other part replaced was the recoil spring at around 7000 rounds. I've never bothered with the other striker fired brands as the Glock is good enough. If you are going to shoot from a holster a lot then the scratchs are irrelevant, the finish will eventually wear off anyway. I managed to scratch mine in the first week that I had it, I wouldn't be able to tell where the scratch was if I was to look now.

I would wait for the Walther P99. I think it would be best to shoot them all before you decide.

I agree about getting a NIB gun without the scratches. $350 out of the door would be different.

No

You don't say where you are from, so I don't know for sure, but I was at the gun store today, and they were $435 nib +tax & $15Nics fee, so $450 nib VS 400 used with dings, scratches, and dents... I'd spend the extra $50.

that is not a bad deal, BUT, for a few dollars more, you get a new one and a lifetime gun that you wont use as a hammer while riding fence. my 17 is near two decades old now, after some thousands of rounds, still looks about the same and does shoot the same. it has tritium sights and, yes, i have practiced in low light. from the first shot to now, it has never choked.

as far as the sights go, this is not a target pistol , so, minute of BG at three yards will max out your requirements, sights not required as you prolly wont have time to use them.

if you decide to buy new, consider other calibers and configurations.

From a shop that a very fair deal.

A Glock is a Glock is a Glock. They arent sensitive or prone to failure.

A Glock is the one gun I would buy used, sight un-seen even. There just isnt much to them to go wrong.

Take a look at The FN pistols as well.A lot of features and A Lot of know how went into the design.Heck They only make 75% of the US military arms as well as word wide.

I'd go for it!

The G17 is probably the best Glock ever manufactured. I've owned a 17 since 1987, 1988. It was originally a 17L (long slide) for which I bought a standard slide.
I have carried this gun, but since it has a 3.5lb trigger, I don't consider it optimal for CCW...trigger is too light. Great for target shooting though...with either slide.

Anyway, $400 out the door sounds pretty darn good! I do suggest you buy a few (or more then a few) standard capacity magazines. Buy Glock mags, not the aftermarket brands.
