I saw some American Eagle 55 gr FMJ boat tail .223 ammo for $6.99 for a box of 20 rounds. Is that a good price?

The way ammunition prices have bounced around the last year or so, it's hard for me to keep track.

Where? That's a very good price, considering even the cheapest steel-case is $5/box locally, and the cheapest brass-case is closer to $10.

^ Those were the days. . . . . . . . and the days we should have been buying a lot of it. :banghead:

If you are willing to buy 1000 rounds at a time, I saw some slightly better deals (a few cents per round) on 55gr FMJ during various summer sales. The Igman stuff is going for $0.31-$0.32/rd at several places if you are willing to take a chance with them. Otherwise, that is probably the market price for 55gr FMJ USA production brass-cased ammo.

I shot some AE 115 grain out of one of those 100 round boxes recently. That was the first and last time I will ever buy AE. Under powered and tons of flash. Very dirty also. Hopefully their rifle rounds are better. I'd rather pay $7.99 for PMC at dicks

The American Eagle is Federal Cartridge manufacture and that is a good price if that is the cost. Meaning if you buy it online then see what shipping would run. Over the counter plus tax that is a good price. Right now Cabela's is getting about a buck a box more than that.

The AE223 is OK stuff, not great but OK run of the mill 223.

My LGS advertises cases of American Eagle .223 for $350 each. Considering that you are getting a case price for individual boxes of ammo, I'd say that's a good deal. Not a screaming, fill-up-your-truckbed type of deal, but definitely worth picking up a few boxes.

While my local prices haven't caught up, I've seen several online retailers advertising both bulk packs and 20rd boxes of various 5.56 ammo for prices approaching $.33/round. That's the price that most 5.56 ammo was selling for before the Great Firearms Panic of '13.

Some of us did buy a lot of it. But it all went to the bottom of a lake in a boating accident.
