Will Woollard v.Sheridan become the next 2nd Amendment case to reach SCOTUS?

And if so, how long until it potentially reaches SCOTUS?

Appeals court considers key provision of Maryland’s gun-control law

By Ann E. Marimow, Published: October 24

Woollard’s renewal request was denied in 2009, however, when a state board ruled that he had not shown a “good and substantial reason to wear, carry or transport a handgun as a reasonable precaution against apprehended danger.”

Regardless of the outcome, one of the parties in the case will likely petition the Supreme Court, something Davis alluded to near the end of the session.

“I suppose if we wanted to do everyone a favor,” he said, “we would just . . . send this to the Supreme Court and get a clear answer for a change.”

The 4 CA heard the case last Wednesday. I'd guess 3 moths minimum before we see a ruling. Either side can request an En Banc hearing from the 4 CA or apply for Cert from Scotus after the ruling. Neither of them is guaranteed or automatic.

The case is now called Woollard v Gallagher. The issue on whether SCOTUS will hear any appeal is really contingent upon the outcome. A decision favorable to Woollard would probably send the matter to SCOTUS, as it would create a split in the Circuits. A decision against Woollard might not be granted cert by SCOTUS. However, this might not be the case, as many of the decisions of other Circuits against gun rights outside of the home can be summarized as "this is above our pay grade, so unless and until SCOTUS tells us otherwise...." Thus, SCOTUS may well take it up. This is Gura's case.

The appeals panel in Woollard is composed of the following judges:

Robert King. Appointed by Clinton
Andre Davis. Appointed by Clinton
Albert Diaz. Appointed by Obama
