It's not a SIG but.....

The reason Sigs enjoy this reputation is simple. They earned it!

Sigs are very accurate right out of the box, super reliable, and the build quality is superior to most.

I hear some people say X gun is the most reliable and it goes bang every time. That's great, but it's not just that brand, it's most top quality firearms theses days.

Glocks fail, Sigs fail, and XDs fail, just not that often.

What is the main function of the firearm? Hitting what you aim at. Accuracy is king. For that Sig is head and shoulders above most gun manufacturer's right out of the box.

Guns are a very personal thing. You need to figure out what your needs are, your abilities with a given weapon and make sure they all come together.

Some folks shoot Glocks very well, I don't, so Glocks are not for me. A buddy of mine sold me his Sig P226ST so he could buy a Glock. He shoots the Glock better, that's the gun for him.

Stick with some of the major well respected manufacturer's and you'll be fine. Sig, S&W, Springfield, Glock, HK, Walther, CZ and a few others are all good manufacturers.

ok "nail driving" sigs have tighter specs so they must be kept clearer than a glock does to function
well maintained both with probably function flawlessly
but in a "torture test" the sig will fail first

I've never been able to find that side by side comparison, do you have a link?

I might drop my P226 in a mound of rock salt, from a 30 story building, in a monsoon rain, and then drive over it with a truck, and I just want to figure out at what point I'm in trouble.

In fact, that almost happened to me last week.

The current President of Sig Sauer (think Kimber) and Bill Sliver (VP of commerical Sales) are quickly spending that reputation capital that has been built up over the years.

Sig is not the same company it used to be. They are pushing volume over quality. They are creating flashy semi-custom pistols and sacrificing reliability of the old tried and true lines.

It sucks because anyone watching them with an objective eye can see Sig Sauer going down the same road as Kimber. A small company making quality firearms on a realistic scale putting quality first "evolving" into a mass market maker of shotty bling. Look at the prices that true Series I Kimbers command over the newer ones.

The same thing will happen to Sig. Get yourself a true Sig made in W. Germany. I will never buy another Sig pistol that does not have the German proof marks under the slide. The new ones cannot be trusted to live to the Old Sig name and reputation.

There is a great deal of truth in what Rellascout says. The Kimberization of SiG has been painful to watch, though I have no issue with purchasing new Classic Series pieces. The rest can be a crap shoot...

With respect to recent changes at Sig, yes, there is some truth to it. I'm not sure I would say it was a crap shoot, but they are going a little crazy with the different flavors they are now offering.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Clearly what we used to expect from Sig on the quality level is no longer there. Look at the cheap feel of the Mosquito yet is sells for more than any other 22LR in its market.

The accessories of the 556 are horrible. They are not even close to the quality of older German products.

The GSRs are getting better but they still seem like they are hit or miss. Sig should have stuck with a few models got them right instead of 10+ which sometimes work.

Again getting back to the OP. This is not always the case that people who buy premium products hide a product failure. Many of us who are looking out for ourselves and other consumers instead stand on the roof tops and scream to be heard no matter how many times they are personally attacked or marginalized by those who do not agree.

I have to say my love of Sig come from just shooting it, and comparing that to my other guns. It's a wondrous piece of machinery. Kinda like the fun I had driving a Mercedes. Awesome machine. I drive much less expensive cars on a regular basis, but when given the chance, I'll certainly drive a Mercedes, b/c I won't forget the thrill of that machine screaming at, ...ahem... mph. Kinda the same feeling about my Sig. Just a well made machine. And I enjoy it. May not be the most expensive in the world, or the "best," but it's close enough for me to thoroughly enjoy it, and still afford it.

I own a Mercedes Benz. It is the last car they built money be dammed. The engineers were still allowed to build the car they wanted.

Current Sig products like the 556/Mosquito/P220 in all stainless steel forms are no Mercedes Benz.

I've owned alot of handguns (Still do...over 100) none are sigs. I owned a p220 and it was the most acurrate out of the box gun I ever owned. I prefer glocks as carry pieces though, there tough, reliable and take alot of abuse and I don't feel bad if I bang it around! I also carry a combat master detonics, heavy but small and I have about 10000 rounds through her without any malfunctions although she eats recoil springs
