Just got a new Teslong Bore Scope

Alright, that was a chore. One done completely-7600 30.06 Remington. This is a pump action. The first 2 pictures are of the carbon ring after soaking 24 hours in Bore Tech C4 and a whole lot of scrubbing in between. I didn't even bother with the Slip 2000. I was about ready to go find some real C4 as I figured that was what it was going to take. Frustration and stubborn determination not to be beat prevailed, and I did 150 strokes with a tight patch around a bronze brush and JB Bore Brite followed by another 150 strokes with JB Bore Cleaner (yea, I know, but I picked up the Bore Brite first). Well, that finally did it. There are several after pictures. Man, that is one clean mother puppy all the way to the muzzle. I guess soaking in Bore Tech C4 followed by JB will do the trick. I can tell you that JBs didn't do squat before soaking. Igotta40, I feel for the pain that I know will be coming for you. Upper body strength is key. BTW, the Dewey Bore Guide is great. It fits into the muzzle and has a knurled knob that is easy to hold. The good news is the others are bolt action. Drill time on those babies.

Did you unscrew the brush from the rod every stroke, or pull the brush back out?

That bore looks great!

+1 on the Slip 2000 cleaner.. its slimy but works.

I will suggest you consider these... With Kroil and JB. These make cleaning a bore much easier.
The advantage to the felt pellets is, you can thread them on tighter or looser, and that will change how snug the felt pellets fit is in the bore.
https://www.brownells.com/tools-cle...ing-patches-mops/weapons-care-system-pellets/

Holds up to 3 pellets... but the pellets can be fussy to thread on.

Holds "2" pellets.. one is loose fit ( pointless to me ) BUT, the smooth tip makes getting the felt tip threaded on FAR easier

VFG's version... also money well spent.

The 30 caliber pellets were out of stock a few days ago. I asked to be notified when they were back in stock. Until then it's old school-at least in that caliber.

I did my first deep clean this afternoon during the storm. I wetted the throat with Kroil then used the bronze brush wrapped with a patch wetted with a cocktail of JB bore paste and Kroil. About 200 passes, then a few patches wetted with carburetor cleaner then dry patches. This is a Howa 1500 chambered in 6.5 Grendel. Before/after pics with the Teslong bore scope.

I'm still working on a carbon ring in an AR 10 that looks like your after picture. I'm getting there, but it's a real bugger.

I have seen specific tools for scraping out carbon from AR15 bolts so I’m pretty sure they would work for the AR10.

Depends on who you ask. To each his own I always say...

I realize you can get a whole range of advice from people these days, good and bad.

Anyone advocating for ignorance when it comes to knowing if your gun is clean or not is giving out bad advice and it doesn’t depend on who’s saying it.

I gave up on the AR temporarily at least and went to soaking muzzle brakes. The 7mm Sako cleaned right up.

As I said to each his own and if you like using one that's your deal. Calling people ignorant because they don't need one to tell if the gun barrel is clean or not is wrong. It don't take a bore scope for me to tell myself or others when they need to clean the barrel. I know without a scope when it's time. On another note squeaky clean barrels don't always equate to best accuracy. Of course you may want to read upon that aspect of barrel cleaning. Carry on...

Ignorance

noun
lack of knowledge or information.
"he acted in ignorance of basic procedures"

. It don't take a bore scope for me to tell myself or others when they need to clean the barrel

Using a borescope is the only way to know if it’s clean since we can’t see inside the barrel without one. Stroking until you get a clean patch doesn’t tell you anything about the hard carbon build up in the throat and first few inches of the barrel.

If you’re a fella that shoots 3 in a paper plate a week before deer season and not much more then let ignorance be bliss. However, if you shoot a lot and care about accuracy then you really should invest the $50 for a Teslong bore scope and upgrade your cleaning game.

On another note squeaky clean barrels don't always equate to best accuracy. Of course you may want to read upon that aspect of barrel cleaning

Your bad advice on barrel cleaning aside, I feel pretty safe in saying there’s not much you’re going to teach me about rifle accuracy.

As I said to each his own. My ragged one whole groups tell me all I need to know. As far as range time, at least once a week...

Congratulations’
The best short range shooters in the world can’t do that on a consistent basis with highly specialized rifles.
Everyone I’ve ever talked to has thought their cleaning routine was good until they got a bore scope and found out the truth. Including myself.
It’s not the end of the world if a guy shoots with a layer of carbon on the riflings, it’s just not clean.

[The only thing expensive about a Teslong is not having one.]

That looks great! JB/Kroil treatment really seems to be the secret sauce, at least from repeated testimony I've read (and obviously your results).
If it helps reduce how time consuming it can be getting that hard carbon out, I'm all in for it. 👍

I use cheap wallyworld "carb cleaner" myself (smells like lacquer thinner) to get residue out, works great, (and cheap).

Well, NatureBoy was right. The accuracy returned. The photo is not oriented correctly. This is 3" high at 100 yards on sandbags. Now the muzzle brake was carboned up as well. I know there are a lot of methods to clean the muzzle break, but I used Hydrogen Peroxide and Vinger for an overnight soak. The mix was pretty brown in the morning. However, after doing all that, the zero was nowhere near where it was. I came off of the 200 yd range to zero in at the 100 yd range this morning because it was that far off and the mirage was absolutely terrible. However, this should give me about a 200-225 yd zero-enough for the mildots to work at 300-600 yds for the 3 gun meet next week. I only have to hit steel at those ranges in one stage. We'll see. On to cleaning the guns in the 2nd gun safe. Thank you all again for all your help and encouragement. I truly appreciate it.
