Keeping my rifles rust-free

I have a few Remington silicon socks and they work very well, Remington also recently came out with a VCI impregnated rag. Just wipe your guns down with it before storage. It has worked pretty well for me.

I use a product called RIG. I have my fathers 60 year old 30 30 stored with it for the last 10 years. The film is still on it and no rust. It's the best stuff around. It's still there after some handling.

Eezox is excellent stuff. Unfortunately it's extremely toxic compared to other similar products. RIG has gone out of business as of last year.

I bought a roll of VCI paper and have had zero corrosion on anything in it. The most extreme is a polished & blued gun I keep in my garage. Two winters in the teens & two summers in the 90's & humid has made me a believer in it. No cleaning either, the corrosion inhibitor feels like a light oil coating.

Can you please elaborate on the toxicity of Eezox?

Trichlorothylene. Look it up. Eezox has a bunch of it. And it's one of the only gun care products I own that gives me a headache. I didn't invent the idea and Eezox is a hell of a product. I've tested it. But if you read around I'm not the first guy to say it's a little nastier than most other lubes/preservatives that do the same thing. For instance Corrosion-X works just as good in my rusts tests and is non-toxic. I like Eezox as a product but rarely use it anymore.

Another good idea is to maintain a fairly constant temperature wherever your guns are stored. It is not just humidity but extreme temperature fluctuations that causes water to condense. Think of your gun after a chilly night like a cold drink on a hot day, water condensing all over it. This is why you still get rust in the desert even though it is so dry, really cold at night followed by rapid warming when the sun rises. Or something like that.

Boeshield is available at West Marine and other boat-supply stores; I use it in humid eastern NC, and can vouch for it.

Corrosion-X is also very good, and they make a cleaner/lubricant specifically for guns, it looks like:
