My old boss told me two stories of Vietname...
The first was that he remembered the enemy in broken english charging him saying, "we kill you Americans"....that was the extent of that story but kinda gave me the picture of how close he was...
The second story was when he told me how he "knew" he was coming home....His unit stopped and started setting up camp, and there was a saying, kinda like lightening doesn't strike twice in one spot, well artillary doesn't hit the same spot twice either. He found a hole from a shell under a nice shade tree where he decided to start making his foxhole. Well his SGT who didn't like him much decided the shade tree was a nice place to set up the command center and kicked him out to the middle of the field with no shade. He told me how he cussed the SGT the whole time but later that evening/night they were attacked. An artillery shell hit the SGTs command center dead on and killed the SGT instantly. My boss told me that at this point, he knew he was going to make it out of Vietnam alive. Even though the SGT had bad luck, he felt like someone was watching out for him.
