What is the best way to sharpen a knife?

I usually just use the sharpener with a slot on each side of it.
One marked "fine" And the other "Coarse" but I usually cant achieve the sharpness that I am looking for.

Not sure if it matters but the knives i will be sharpening are a Schrade Nitro SQ316 and a 6'' rapala fillet knife.

Thanks

Look at the sticky at top, the one that says "Sharpening FAQ".

If you do a search here, there numerous posts on sharpening techniques.

I used some cheap one-handed sharpener in hardware store the other day and it did a good job. But I'd say Spyderco Sharpmaker is the way to go for most folks.

I have had the best luck with the dmt folding stones. Very fast, easy to obtain an edge. I also like the fact that they are light and can be carried in a pack on a hunting trip, you cant do that with a large stone. Another helpful fact is that you use water to lube the stone not oil it makes for easier cleanup.

you can sharpen a knife on just about any kind of stone as long as you get the right angle!

i use a small diamond embedded stone and jewlers rouge to really hone the edge works like a champ!

I prefer DMT bench stones. I like to freehand my knife sharpening. If you are uncomfortable with this, choose Lansky or Spyderco sharpening "systems". If the edge is not really dull, the ceramic rods do a okay job of sharpening and these are very cheap and easy to use. Plus you are not likely to mark up the side of your blade with this approach as compared to a benchstone.

Where is The Tourist... with pictures.

Buy diamond hones. and a chunk of leather. Stropping does wonders for a sharp blade.

I've had the best luck with Smiths Tri-Hone stones. $20 at most big hardware stores, I've had the same one for about 12 years.

A lot of it depends on the blade metal. I have a good tri-hone stone that will cover most every day pocket knives with stainless steel blades. I have a diamond set for my filet knives. They don't sharpen well on the Tri-Hone.

I have one of those crappy hand-held sharpeners but the only thing that will touch that thing is my bait knife.

Just learn how to sharpen a knife. It seems to be a dying art.
