It would be worthwhile to check out the Wilderness First responder or Wilderness EMT classes. Geared toward operations away from immediate help. Here is one company that ofers them to give you an idea. I have no connection to the company.

Thought I would give an update. I think this thread was very important to me because it highlighted my own limitations. I am currently looking for a first aid class to take.

I am somewhat surprised by the amount of discussion this generated. Let me be very clear yet again, I do not intend on playing paramedic etc... The reason I focused on painkillers is as follows. I have had broken bones before, it is very painful. If help is hour or days away, and I am stuck in my car with a broken leg, I would like to have the option of reliving the pain.
 
Thats understandable just keep in mind that meds available by prescription only are that way for a reason. Used improperly (wrong dose, certain other conditions, etc) they will do much more harm then good.
