I am finally down to powder selection for running off a bunch of .223/5.56 (let's not go there, okay?) in my XL650. I'd would like to load with Varget or 748. Some manuals indicate that this is a compresed load. I have loaded some ammo on single stage presses that required a long powder funnel drop tube and quite a bit of tapping to get the powder in the case. If 748 or Varget loads like that, it's a no-can-do on my progressive press. Has anyone else loaded batches of .223/5.56 on the XL650 with these powders? What was your experience? I have a fair bit of H335, which I know would work, but I need ~ 40 more pounds of powder, and I'd rather start with a clean slate.

I load 223's and Varget on my 550B and my load is close to max and have never experienced any problems dropping, rotating my shell plate, or seating a bullet on a compressed load. Varget drops freely from my Dillon powder measure, and there is not any powder spillage from filled cases on my shell plate. Really not sure what your problem is but on the other hand I can't afford to drive those expensive 650's. LOL :)

I load a lot of .223 using Varget with a Dillon 550. No issues to report. In fact, I use Varget for all my rifles with it all being loaded on a 550.

I use the large powder bar instead of the small and that cleared up any problems with excess powder dropping on the shell plate.

For .223, I'm using H335 and Benchmark in the Dillon XL650. I prefer ball powders when the case necks start getting small.

I'm with Rembrant on this, I use 335. I tried some Varget and didn't get near the consistancy out of the powder measure.

I use a 550. One of the members here suggested polishing the inside of the powder dispenser. It works.

I use 26.0 Varget, 50 grain Nosler BT's, WW cases. Seat to max mag length.
