Looking to add a 2nd 1911 to my collection

Not sure what the used market is like out that way, but here in Georgia, I see decent deals on lots of very nice 1911's on sites like Armslist and theoutdoorstrader. I was just looking at a nice SA Loaded for $650. I'm also seeing the Rugers and Remingtons, as well as Colts and others, all the time.
It's worth a look.

Looking at your price range I lean in the direction of wojownik in that with a little luck you should be able to find a nice Colt Series 70 Government. While that will not get the adjustable sights you can always add Bomar Sights later. My experience with the series 70 guns is they shoot fine right out of the box, at least the several I have do.

The 1991 Colt that I bought a couple of years ago is a pretty nice gun. I don't target shoot, just ring steel, so I didn't feel I needed target sights. I was impressed with the fit and finish. I was looking at a SIG 1911 at the same time, but for some reason, the Colt just felt better.

I'm not a huge fan of Kimber, but the Warrior fits your description and price criteria, but if I'm totally honest, I'd say save a few more bucks up and search out a Springfield TRP. Also grab a Wilson Combat Flat Wire Recoil Spring kit (around $20.00) and grab a bunch of Wilson Combat ETM mags (around $30 each).

^^^ thank you for your reply. It sounds exactly what I'm looking for. How did you find it shoots out of the box? While I don't mind fixed sights for a gun that will be pretty much a range gun for me, I've come to like adjustable sights. Still it's not a deal breaker and I can always buy one if i so choose.

Reliablity was very good. Two range sessions of 100 and 50 rounds, respectively. Used a stock mag that came with the pistol, CMC and Wilson mags. No issues - fed smoothly and positively. Trigger was a bit gritty, but smoothed out quickly with a crisp break after little take up.

I was a little concerned at first when a number of cases ejected straight into my upper forehead for the first 30 or 40 rounds, however it has settled down to a consistent ejection.

Accuracy was very acceptable to me. Consistent - each round went exactly where I wanted, and when I made errors those rounds went exactly where my error should have sent them LOL.

Two dealers I went to said Colt Series 70 can't be purchased in CA yet when I go to the CA handgun approved roster it appears to have two listed. Below is the listing. I'm I wrong about these being Series 70?

O1070 NRA / Stainless Steel Pistol 5" .45 ACP 1/1/2016
O1070XSE / Stainless Steel Pistol 5" .45 ACP 1/1/2016

The cheapest I would buy is a Dan Wesson, and the most expensive I would buy is a Dan Wesson.

So is that in response to the OP's criteria, or you just stating a personal preference? If you know of a source for a Dan Wesson in the 800 to 1100 dollar range - in California - please let us know.

I need to double check when I get to a computer rather than a smartphone but I think both these models are Series 80. But that's not necessarily a big negative to me. I almost had to flip a coin between going for the series 70 and the XSE.

The XSE commander - if that's available in California - would be a really nice way to go.

My logic was to go for a series 70 now, and save up the coin in a couple of years for a Dan Wesson commander ( which is twice the price that I got my series 70 )

I am going to be acquiring some 1911s in the near future... what is interests me at the moment are the Colt Govt Series 70 (full size), Colt 1991 Commander, Armscor/RIA Compact, and the Auto Ordnance...

I am thinking a new Colt GCNM in Series 70 is not on the CA list? That is about $1.2K or less depending. Also guessing a SA Range Officer is not on the CA list. Have one in 9mm I bought in Jan of this year and it has "NOT FOR SALE IN CALIFORNIA" on one end of the box.

It might be finding something on your approved for sale list out there. I own about everything and Rugers are nice, but you would have to replace the rear sight with maybe one of the Novak ones. I am thinking about doing that to one of my Ruger SR1911s.

SIG has an interesting target pistol or two. S&W had a 5 inch from their Performance Center with adjustable sights that looked interesting for about $1.2K

Sorry you live out there.

"Center fire", asking on THR is wasting time. Your question is more California-specific. CA's roster can be found here. It can be sorted by brand &/or caliber, among other factors.

While any non-new 1911 could be available through intrafamilial transfer (between parents & children, only) or in-person-private-party-transfer (between CA residents, only), buying something off CA's roster is the surest way of obtaining something. There are just so many 1911 pattern guns unavailable to most of us in CA.

You do better to ask on a forum tailored specifically to CA gun owners.
While not the best 1911-forum, there's plenty of knowledge on that forum to guide you.

My referenced links are underlined.

Here's a vote for SA Loaded (PX9103L is on the "Roster"). I admit I'm biased 'cuz it was my first 1911.

Take a look at the SIG Model TTT: nicely checkered frame with compact, adjustable night sights for around a grand. SIG's lifetime warranty is an added plus.

if you want a target gun, you should really check out the bullseye-l list. I saw a nice 1911 that shot 10-shot 1" groups at 25 yards smithed by Saylor for 800 bucks a few days ago.

Update. I rented a Colt XSE and was impressed enough to buy one. I am currently waiting out the 10 day waiting period. July 6th can't come soon enough.:banghead:

If you want adjustable sites in that price range, I would suggest the Springfield Range Officer. It compares to the Colt Military in my opinion.
