I thinking about building an M1 Garand for a summer project, Is there any parts suppliers to stay away from? I'm wanting to get a price before I start building, but I'll probably just get a field grade from the CMP.

i would say that the cmp idea is probably your best bet.

its the real deal, from folks in the know.

they test fire and inspect every garand they sell.

i seriously doubt you could build one for the price, in fact, if you use quality name brand components, you could probably get 2 cmp rifles.

The FG from the CMP is your best bet. Get one with nice metal and a crappy stock. Then while your there get one of their walnut stocks with or without metal depending if the metal on your FG is good enough. Refinish the new stock and you'll have a sweet looking M1. Then you can pickup some spare parts like a spring kit and maybe a firing pin and a combo tool.
It'll be a heck o fa lot cheaper than building one from scratch.

OH don't forget some ammo while your there.

Building isn't going to be cheap though you will get what you want. If you want a certain barrel or what not you can buy the parts you want. The CMP rifles will be ready to go and will work. For $500 its hard to compete with the CMP.
